The Davis government is
displaying "arrogant
behavior” toward the people
of Ontario, Huron -Bruce
MLA Murray Elston told a
gathering of party faithfuls
at the annual meeting of the
Huron -Bruce Liberal Associ-
ation last Thursday evening
in Ripley.
Mr. Elston said this
arrogance is well illustrated
by the May 19 budget which
introduced increases in
personal income tax, gas tax
and increases on such items
such •as cigarettes and
alcohol.
He said he doubted the
government would have
'ended up with 70 seats on'
March 19 had"it campaigned
on last Tuesday's budget.
• Mr. Elston claimed
• Premier Davis is the
"greatest of all evaders in
• , the House", sOffig, the
premier has the:ability to
extricate himself by jumping
on members of the op-
position when questioned on
• controversial matters, for
. example the Raymor-Astra
break-up.
He said the government
paid linservice' tOfa,rmers
in the budget and the, speech
from the throne, but nothing
substantial has been done to.
help 'farmers face the
•, problems of high input costs
and low returns. a
Mr. Elston said the budget
included a small program
for fruit and vegetable
growers, but there is nothing
for young farmers, capital
input or tile drainage.
He said the, best way to
impress an unresponsive
government is for the people
to make themselves heard
loudly and clearly so that the
concerns of the constituency
may be taken to Queen's
Park by the member.
Mr. Elston also told the
gathering he will be opening
a constituency office • in
Wingham. This new office
will. operate in addition to the
Constituency office already
located in Kincardine.
Mr. Murray
called upon
Murray Gaunt to make a few
brief ,remarks. Mr.'. Gaunt
said that he is enjoying his
"new lifestyle" of farming ,
very .much. He added that
Several of his e* -colleagues
from .Queen's Park • have
:•-infOrmed%, hint that. Mr.
Elstontag the right attitude
and is working quite sell in
the legislative assembly as
well as outside.
In other business, Associa-
tion President John
MacKenzie of Tiverton
accepted nominations from
• the nominating committee
for the 1981 executive.
The executive of the
Huron -Bruce - Liberal
Association for 1981 is:
president, John MacKenzie
of Tiverton; first vice, Mac
Inglis of, Belmore; second
vice, John Jewitt of Lon -
des boy° ; treasurer, Neil
Devlin of Southampton; and,
