Wingham. drops Fergus
in second game of series
By Peter Bauer
Larry Donaldson scored
the eventualame-winning
goal at the 46 -second mark of
the second period as the
Wingham Ironmen defeated
the Fergus Green Machine in
Fergus on Tuesday night.
The victory gave the Iron -
men a 2-0 lead in the best -of -
five semi-final series.
Ken Cousins gave the Iron -
men an early . first -period
lead at 3:52 of the opening
frame. Mike Montgomery
drilled a shot from the point
that goalie Dan DeJong
found too lard to handle.
After blocking the shot he
lost sight of the puck at the
side of his skates. Before he
found it, Cousins moved in
and tapped the puck fast
That was the only scoring
play in the period, but there
were a number of good
scoring chances. DeJong
shut out the Ironmen for the
duration of the period, never
being tested seriously.
Although the shots on goal
were only 8-6, Don Higgins,
who made his first appear-
ance in this series, was
forced to • come up big. Ile
made three great saves to
hold the. Ironmen on top of
their precious one -goal lead.
Higgins stopped Paul Gear
cold with a pad save off
Gear's shot from the slot,
and later used the pads to
stop Mike Harper from
evening the score following
good pressure with six
minutes remaining in the
period.
The best save was left until
the last minute, when he
made a chest -high save off
Greg McCabe's shot from
the slot after a pass from the
side of the goal. Higgins
moved across to block the
shot while standing up. If he
had dropped tohis knees it
would have been a sure goal.
The Ironmen played their
best period of hockey in the
middle frame, scoring twice
before allowing the only goal
against. Donaldson potted,
the game *inner just 46
seconds into the new period
as the Ironmen swarmed
around the Fergus net, His
two linemates had a chance
to beat 'DeJong but were th-
warted as DeJong played a
good game' between the
pipes. Doreildson ineved in
with the goalie down and the
Ironmen led by a 2-o count.
Wingham continued to
press, but got careless with
the punk and 1`Iigghas was
forced to come tip with a big
save. Jamie Denny siippec„
around the defence and
headed for the Wingham
goal. He was successful in
deking the Wingham net -
minder to the ice, but while
down Higgins Stopped the
shot with the tip of his skate.
Jim Blackwell , answered
that attempt with. a, goal at
the opposite end of the' rink
with a'shot from close range
at 16:24 on a powerplay,
After the faceoff at center
ice the Greefl Machine
moved in with a two on one
with Paul McDpnatd con-
verting Denny s: cross ice
pass for the lone Fergus
score. That goal Came° just
nine seconds after Blackwell
made it 3-0.
The final frame tcg.., the
Green Machine eonteto life
as they pressed for agoal but
out of numerous drives to
wards the net only eight
found their way to Mark
and Higgins was equatto the
test.
Steve 7.etder potted the
lone' goal '"of: the period,
drilling one from the left
faceoff circle and beating
Higgins on the far side, wi
the puck catching the fa
bottom right hand side of th
net.

Moments .later he .made

mugs' screen shot from -the
point:
However, at 2:53 John
Pines was able to telt
Higgins on a shot from the
topof the faceoff circle while
being checked by an Iron-
man defender. 'Higgins was
pulled at this point and Doug
Gamble carried on between
the pipes.
Before he got settled, the
.Black Hawks .knotched- up
two Mere 'in less -than three
minutes. 'Wayne Mills
finished off a great give -and -
go play. He carried` the puck
across the blueline then
passed to Clint Petteplace.
The lone defencemari moved
to cover Petteplace, leaving
Mills alone in front. He made
no Mistake on the return
pass, giving the Walkerton
club a 3-0 lead.
At 5:35 Kevin Pritchard
scored the game -winning
goal, rifling one from close
range and beating Gamble
over his glove side shoulder.
At this point things looked
rather bleak, but the Iron -
men began to fight back.
Gord Kinahan potted the
first of three for the Ironmen
at 14:31, with a 25 -foot wrist
shot. Kinahan seemed to be
the most surprised person in
the rink,. knowing that
McNair seldom missed any-
thing throughout the first
part of the game. Just over
two 'minutes later Frayne
broke in with Jinn Blackwell
on a two -on -one. Frayne
made a good move to get
around the defenceman, then
passed.to Blackwell, who put
the puck away, narrowing
the gap to 4-2.
The Ironmen continued to
press through the final
minutes of the second period,
but McNair would not give
an inch, keeping the-Ironmen
at bay.
Before the Ironmen
registered their third goal,
Gamble was forced to come
up big on two consecutive
shots by Pitt, who was left all
alone in front of the goal.
Larry Donaldson brought' the
Ironmen to within one goal
with a 15 -footer on a power-
play. That goal came with
just under 12 minutes re-
maining but the Ironmen
could not get the equalizer
and the Black Hawks won 4-3
in a thriller, played before
583 spectators.

Gamble was forced to come
up with a big save in the
early going, stopping Jamie
Denny ` on a breakaway on ; 1
the first shot by the Green
Machine. The game -winning
goal came as a surprise, with
Kieffer, drilling one from
close range. The puck was
lying in the crease and a de-
fender trying to clear the
puck behind the goal
knocked it into his own net.
Kieffer would have had a
chance to bang it in had the
defenceman not been able to
touch the puck. That goal
came at 8:39.
Just before the period
ended the Ironmen went on
the powerplay and cashed in
following good pressure and
good control in the Fergus
end. Mike Montgomery
drilled one from the point.
Dan DeJong gave a big re-
bound and while he was
trying to regain his balance
Mark Frayne backhanded
the puck past the hapless
goalie.
