Board to hire special teacher.
to help Indochinese students
By Dave Sykes
The ,Huron County Board
of Education will hire an
additional teacher to ac-
celerate the integration of
Indochinese students into the.
school system.
The board gave unanimous
consent to the motion
Monday, after learning that
44 Indochinese students m
Huron schools are having
problems integrating
because of their inability to
speak 1 1 or understand
English.
John Cochrane, director of
education, said the board
faces a real problem with the
students because they
cannot speak or understand
English. Before the students
can be fully integrated into
the education system, he
said, they must be taught the
language.
The major problem is. with
22 secondary schooI.
students, 20 of whom attend
Central Huron Secondary
School at Clinton. They are
grouped into one class and
spend most of the day with a
remedial resource teacher,
who as a result is unableto
provide assistance to other
students.
Superintendent W. D.
Kenwell told the board the
secondary school students
have' the academic ability,. There are no grants
