Christmas
Storer
Contest.
By Veronica Bakelaar
Grade 7, East Wawanosh
Lisa Walker clutched her books tighter to her as she
stepped off thenchool, bus. Winter certainly was here,
she thought, but along with it came the best time of the
• year, Christmas. She just couldn't wait to get the pair
of skates she wanted. As she walked in the door of her
house she zipped off her coat and flung it on the floor,
then she threw her books on the table and went straight
to -;the kitchen.
"Hi," she muttered to her mom as she opened the
refrigerator door.
"Hello," her mom replied.
"Hurry up!" shouted her brother. "I'm hungry too."
"Just wait!" Lisa shouted back. "I'll take as long as
I want." Once she was done she turned on the TV,
tial Chris'
followed by her brother who was gobbling down his
food."Can't you eat like a human being?" shouted Lisa.
"No," he brother replied. Lisa sighed and Mike stuck
his tongue at her.
"Okay, that's enough!" shouted her mother angrily,
"Can't yoa two stop fighting? Lisa, you're twelve and
Mike, you're fourteen, Why can't you two stop fighting
and act like you like each other?"
"Because we don't," said Mike. Mrs. Walker walked
out of the room. Angrily she thought, I must do some-
thing to stop those two from constantly fighting. Just
then she thought of a terrific idea.
That night Mr. and Mrs. Walker announced their
idea. "Kids," said Mr. Walker, "your mom and I have
decided that there will be no Christmas presents this
year. Instead we will show love, respect and do favors
for each other."
"What!" Lisa gasped. "No Christmas presents. But
what about the skates I wanted and the presents that I
was going to get you guys?"
"The best present you can get us is to stop fighting
with Mike," said -Mr. and Mrs. Walker together. The
rest of the meal was silent. Lisa glanced at her brother.
Mike didn't look very happy at all. This is going to be a
rotten Christmas, she thought.
After dinner she watched TV, did her homework and
went to bed. At eight o'clock in the morning she was
awakened by Mike poking her.
"Leave me alone," grumbled Lisa. "It's Christmas
holidays, no school, and I want.to sleep in."
"But I have to talk to you. You know, I've been
thinking about what mom and dad said. Maybe it won't
be so bad after all. Plus whom and dad really want this
to make us stop fighting."
"Easy for you to say," replied Lisa. "You don't
really want something special. Ido."
"So do I," said Mike. "But We can both get it next
year. Think about it, Lisa, jusf think about it."
Lisa did thinksbout it; she thought about it hard.
