Grade 5. Ilowlek Central
I was been in a forest way,up in the northern part of
the United States. My brothers and sisters were all
fine, tall and sturdy, but from the very beginning my
Mether saw that I was „going to be the short and puny
one of . the family. She and my father were dis-
appointed, because all of our family had grown
straight and tall.
Many times I felt like crying when' my brothers and
sisters and the neighbors made fun of me for being so
small. But I tried hard to stand straight and I tried not
to be jealous when I saw the others grow head and
shoulders .altiove me. I was sure that God in heaven
knew about me, because He had made me, and He
could make ine grow if He wanted me to. I kept saying
to myself, "I'm small, I know, but I'll do the best I can,
and maybe someday I'll be able to do some good in the
world."
When I was still quite young some men came to my
forest home. They wore big, heavy boots, wool -lined
coats and caps, and they carried hatchets and
measuring tapes. I couldn't help bearing what they
said. One man said, "The company I work for ships
Christmas trees to Ontario and they want only the very
best."
I shrank up when I heard this because I knew I was
way too small. Just then my brothers said, "They want
the best, that's us not you, not at all."
That night when T should have been asleep I asked
one of my older brothers, "What is Christmas?" •

The mothers baked home-
made buns, making two
batches — one with all-
purpose white flour and one
with whole wheat flour from
wheat -grown in Huron
County and stone ground.
Everyone noted the dif-
ference in color an . - texture
while kneading o
and was surprised see ho
well the, whole wheat b
rose before ,baking - they
out -rose the refined buns.
Following the discussion,
members compared the buns
as they were enjoyed during
the, refreshment break.
During the discussion, the
group looked at the use of
sugar and salt in the daily
diet, both naturally and as
additives. Most processed
foods have one or both. It
was agreed that foods in
their natural state are most
favored. Dr. R. Hume -Hall
described frozen pizzas as
being artificial cheese and
tomato sauce, so they fit only
into the food category of
grains. Many mothers were
glad they made their own
pizzas for their families.

Barbara Kerr closed the
meeting with as article
describing LLL in Canada
and noting that the majority
of Canadian mothers now
are breastfeeding their
babies.
