Registration is up for the
1980-8? season in the
beginners' program offered
by the Wingham Minor
Hockey Association, organ-
izers report. The program is
growing in popularity every
year.
One of the major com-
plaints in a recent province -
wide study of problems irE
minor hockey came from
parents who felt there was
too little teaching of basic
skills and too much em-
phasis on games and winning
at young ages.
According to Doug Neil,
program coordinator, the
priorities of the beginners'
program aretohave fun, to
learn basic hockey, skills of
skating and puck handling
and to learn to play with
other children in a
cooperative manner.
Program instructors in-
clude Murray Hunter, Allan
Harrison, Andy McBride,
Larry Lane and John
Henderson. These in-
structors, who have
upgraded their skills through
the National Coaching
Certification Program, plan
their lessons so that hockey
skills are learned in a
progressive and fun -filled
manner.
The program is for
children aged five to eight
years, and runs every
Tuesday and Thursday from
4:30 to 5:30 p.m. The em-
phasis for the ;five and six-
year -olds is to establish good
balance on skates and a
feeling of ease, so other skills
can be learned successfully.
Tfie seven and 'eight -year-
olds begin puck 'handling
after they have mastered
some of the skating skills.
Children do not learn the
basic skills in game 'situa-
tions, Mr. Neil emphasized.
Teaching situations must be
created to learn these skills,
where they can have fun and
atthe same time be chal-
lenged to give maximum;
effort.
This year the program is
incorporating the National
Power Skating tests so
players can achieve certain
levels of proficiency and
receive badges based on
passing various skill tests.
This should provide in-
centive for the youngsters to
work at improving their
skills.
It' still is not too late to
enroll a youngster in the
program. For further in-
formation contact Mr. eieil
or drop around to the arena
and see the program for
yourself.
