eters rally to tie Royls. in
i:nterrnediate h e opener
The Wingham Royals
opened their 1980-81 season
Friday night by going head-
to-head with the Lucknow
Lancers. The rivals played
tough, fast hockey and ended
up playing to an 8 -all draw.
The new -look Royals
opened fast, out hustling and
hitting the Lancers through
the first period. At 7:51 of the
period Edgar Williams, a
veteran Royal, opened the
scoring by converting a pass
from linemates Rick Jacklin
and Steve Caslick. Four
minutes later, newcomer
Blaine . McCutcheon tallied
again for the Royals,
blasting a shot past Martin in
the Lucknow net. Jim McGee
picked up an assist.
In the second period the
Royals got off to a quick
start when McCutcheon
scored a powerplay goal at
24 seconds. Fraser Strong
assisted. Steve Caslick
scored for the Royals about a
minute later to give them a
commanding 4-0 lead.
Jacklin and Williams
assist -d.
Just when it appeared that
the home club was going to
walk away from the visitors,
Stanley tallied to. break the
shutout. Rick Foxton replied
for the Wingham squad,
assisted by Bernie Haines
and Neil Bieman, but the
Lancers added three goals to
come to within one goal of
the Royals, 5-4. Bieman,
unassisted, put the home
team up by two, breaking in
alone and easing the puck
past a startled Lucknow
goaltender. .However the
period ended 6-5 when
Stanley added his second
marker of the game.
In the third period the
Royals again went up by two
goals when Jacklin scored
after being set up by Haines
and Williams. Blair Gordon
then netted the Royal's
eighth goal, assisted by Dave
Golley and McCutcNon, and
it looked like the Royals had
everything under control.
Lucknow however potted
three goals to tie the score
with their final marker being
scored by Stanley, his third
at 18:46 of the period.
The game featured fast
action throughout with lots of
heavy hitting by the Royals
defensive crew of Bernie
Haines, Ron Riley, Blaine
McCutcheon, Kevin Hastie
and Rick Foxton. However
the quick pace and penalty
killing tired the Royals, who
were unable to hold onto
their lead.
The new -look Royals show
a lot of promise and more
balance than in previous
years. Eleven players picked
up points.
Blaine McCutcheon, with
two goals, a dangerous shot
and heady defensive work,
stood out for the Royals.
Steve Caslick exhibited
steady forechecking and
solid positional play at
centre.
The Royals continue their
schedule Friday, Oct. 24, at
Goderich and return home to
play Harriston on Oct. 25, at
8:30 p.m. Come out and see
the Royals in action.
