In my opinion
The Canadian Parliament
is once again in session.
MP's were recalled one week
early .to debate patriation of
our constitution, a debate
which will he ione and con-
troversial. An issue which is
overdue and essentail. A
daydream which may be-
come a pightmare.
The task before our
government is immense. It
must find a way to hold to-
gether a country which is
divided by countless
geographical' and' cultural
barriers. Creating a work-
able constitution for Canada
may be the most difficult job
that any government has
ever faced. Nevertheless,
Canadian unity is not impos-
sible.
Canada will stay together
because the people of this
country want it to. Since we
do want Canada to remain
united, we will find some
solution to keep it that way.
After all, we were the people
that built the impossible rail-
way.
If our government leaders
are going to make the dream
into a reality, they must
tread on very thin ice. Our
leaders must ensure that
Canada will be a country
that is in the heart of every
citizen, not merely a country
that is found on a piece of
paper in Ottawa. The first
ministers of this country
must complete the national
dream. To instill Canada into
the . hearts of us all, our
government must create a
constitution that will be for
Canadians.
This is perhaps why a
National Charter of Rights is
necessary. A Canadian char-
ter of rights would give 'us a
feeling of belonging in the
same way that the Magna
Carta makes all Britons feel
united. A charter of rights
may truly create a Canadian
personality. A charter of
rights may create a Can-
adian common denomina-
tor; a common denominator
—laza ,,.:ii 4'mn ' f'ono,iu
strong ,and united, and keep
the dream alive.
Since the dream of a united
Canada has been alive for
113 years, there is no reason
for it to stop. All Canadians
are proud of what we have
accomplished and we look
forward to what we will ac-
complish. We are proud of
our heritage. This is why I
feel we must remain
sovereign, ',Our ties with
Great Britaiu give us a
history to look back on. If the
link with England is broken,
it will cut us off from the past
and without a past, there can,;
be no future.
