The two sides appeared to
hello closer to settling their
contract dispute, which
revolves primarily around
the issues of salary and
teacher -pupil ratio.
In the meantime parents,
upset at the interruption in
their children's education,
have begun to involve them-
selves in the dispute. A group
of protesting parents
planned to attend the board
meeting scheduled for
Tuesday afternoon and
parents also were being
J
achers ontintie
for higher pay
asked to .sign a petition to
Education Ministr Bette
Stephenson demanding
intervention in
the dispute.
The board is offering the
teachers a salary increase,
including increment, of 20.6
per cent over two years, an
increase from 19.3 per cent
in its previous 'offer.
However the teachers are
demanding an increase of 28
per cent, including incre-
ment.
The board estimates the
teachers' demands, in-
cluding salary and workload
clauses, would increase its
costs by more than 35 per
cent over the two years.
The board has accepted
the recommendation of a
provincial mediator that the
matters' still outstanding in
the dispute go to binding
anbitration, with a lump sum
payment representing six
per cent of the 1978-79 salary
paid to each teacher pending
the outcome of arbitration.
The teachers so far have
refused to go along with the
recommendation.
John Bowers, Bruce
County education director,
said Tuesday there was little
new to announce pending the
outcome of the board
meeting.
Be said students who
wished to study at school
despite the strike were being
accommodated as much as
posSible in study halls and
libraries by the principals
and vice principals. These
are mainly the senior
students, he noted.

Other highlights of the

drug plan. The board
presently pays 85 per cent of
the drug plan. As a result of
the deletion of an extracur-
ricular allowance, monies
available for staff improve-
