'could strike today'.
Bruce County secondary
school teachers could begin a
strike as early as today, Oct.
1, following the breakdown of
contract negotiations with
the county board of educa-
tion,
'The two sides met Monday
in Owen Sound in alast-ditch
effort to reach a settlement,
but the teachers' represent-
atives walked out of the
meeting after only an hour.
and 45 minutes.
In a press release, Board
Chairman R. J. Gatis said
the Monday meeting was
held at the request off the
teachers. Although progress
was made on several minor
issues, the teachers ap-
parently were dissatisfied
with the progress and left the
meeting, he said.
"In an attempt to avoid the
impending strike, the board
renewed its offer to accept
the recommendation of the
provincial mediator to
submit all outstanding issues
to binding arbitration."
In an earlier meeting Sept.
25 the trustees unanimously
accepted the mediator's
recommendation for a
settlement and offered to go
to binding arbitration, with a
lumpism naytnent ntrbe
teachers pending the out-
come of arbitration.
The contract offered by the
board would pay secondary
school teachers in Bruce
County an average salary of
$27,733 for 1980-81. The
salary for a teacher in the
highest category and witb;11
years experience would be
$31,954, not including extra
degree or responsibility
allowances. More than one-
third of the teachers are at
this level.
According to the board, the
teachers currently are
demanding pay increases of
28 per cent over two years,
with the total package cost,
including benefits, rising by
more than 35 per cent over
the two-year period.
