If the choice were mine . .
Ia
By Henrietta Oldengarm 12F
bthis balmy season, if the
choice were mine to make,
I'd Iike to be an ant. It would
be Utopia for real: no prob-
lems to worry about, no pro-
found thoughts to confuse
me, no labyrinth to boggle
my mind — everything
would be simple.
The wind would allow me
to burrow a silky tunnel
through earth to my home.
And, when the sun shines as
golden as the ceilings of
dandelions, I'd crawl outto
the grass's sweetness -and
earth's warm breath to get
my food. Just as simple as
that.
But it's not my choice —
I'm here on earth under my
own golden sunlight with the
dandelions at my feet. And,
for us, a simple blade of
grass does not lead our gaze
directly into eternity; we
follow the winding passages
of the tree's, branches to the
sky above. And then where?
Oh, for a simple blade of
grass!
Ah_, but that sky, those
billowing clouds. Right now,
get up and look at the hea-
vens. Not a glance, but a
long,' deep search. Nowhere
is the sky so promisingly
blue, never 'so clear and
playful.
Now let your eyes drop to
the treeline. Where it once
was bare and skeletal, now it
is full of green life or fra-
grant white blossoms. And
lower yet are the colored
splashes of - flowers waving
their tribute to spring. And
the grass — even the drone of
a lawnmower marks its wel-
come.
But, split the luscious
clumps of grass and observe
the ant. Their tiny black
bodies twinkling in and out 4f
the plants,, their paths
winding in no apparent'
direction, yet so deeply sure
bf their destination. Spring
and warmth and sweat
smells of grass are always
merely a heartbeat away.
And then I know that to be au
ant, to lead a life simple and
sure is the best anyone could
choose. °
