Ring
ts WI meeting
The
eetihg of the
titute was held
ary room of the
tY Centre on Wed-
•neSdaravening of last week.
he original Tweedsmuir
History Book was on display,
as well as scrap books
containing articles of in-
terest about the surrounding
community.
Mrs. Norman Newans had
prepared an interesting and
informative account of the
Beef Ring which was read by
Mrs. W. Johann. The data
was taken from the diary of
the late Christian Johann,
grandfather of Wilfred
Johann who resides on a
farm east of Belmore. It was
there that the first

slaughterhouse was built
(now known as the abattoir).
Mr. Johann was. allowed $15
to build this new shop on his
farm in 1897. James Mulvey,
grandfather of Harry
Mulvey, was the first
customer in the following
year.
The beef was prepared on
Tuesday evening and had to
be picked up by 7 a.m. the
following day as there was
no refrigeration at that time.
In 1901 the abattoir was
moved to the farm of the late
John Doig on Concession
Two of Carrick Township.
Due to the death of John Doig
in 1905 at the age of 45 years,
the building was moved to
the farm of the late Joseph
Vogan, also on Concession

TWO.. Carrick. A good team
of horses and a capable man
with the reins transported
the structure while sleighing
MIS good. Willing helpers
were on hand to assist when
rieceSsary.
Mr. Vogan carried on with
the butchering until 1930
when the building was
moved back to the Doig
farm., The late John Doig's
son, John, carried on the
butchering service for the
Beef Ring wail 1946.
Refrigerators were then
coming into use and so the
Beef Ring was phased out.
Prior to this, the -'beef was
kept in crocks on the earthen
floor of the cellar.
Business of the meeting
included contacting a car-
penter to build a storage
cabinet fdi•-- the Tweedsmuir
History Book, scrap books
and valuable records of the
Belmore Women's Institute.
It was decided to add $4.00
from general funds to
Pennies for Friendship, this
donation to be taken to the
&4O4
District Animal on May 20.
Mrs. Gordon Weir read an
interesting article, 'Growing
Old'. Program conveners
were reminded to meet in the
library room of the Com-
munity Centre on Thursday
evening, May 22, at 8 to
prepare the programs for
1980-81
Trader
Last year 12 farmers lost
their lives in accidents with
tractors on the road, M. R.
Bolton, agricultural
representative with the
Ministry of Agriculture and
Food for Bruce County,
reports.
He urges farmers to be
particularly safety -
conscious when operating
tractors. Twenty miles per
hour in a car is a snail's
pace, but the same speed on
a tractor, particularly
hauling a heavy load, is not
safe under anything but ideal
conditions.
