ospital board realignment
gives Ashfield representation
By Sharon Dietz
The Wingham and District
Hospital Board upheld a
management committee
recommendation giving
Ashfield Township' represen-
tation on the board when it
met April 23.
Frank MacKenzie, who
sits on the board as
representative for the
village of Lucknow and the
townships of West Wawa -
nosh and Kinloss, was ap-
pointed to sit for the re-
mainder of this term also
as representative for Asti -
field. A motion will be intro-
duced at the hoapital annual
meeting in June to approve
Ashfield's representation.
The recommendation by
the management committee
followed a request, by Ash-
field Reeve Warren Zinn at'
last year's annual meeting
that the township be
represented on the board.
It was suggested that Ash-
field be asked to make a
donation to the hospital when
it enters the corporation, but
one board member com-
mented, '`I really believe
dowries are outdated."
However Dr. Donald Jolly,
who sits on the board as a
representative of the
medical staff, pointed out
that Ashfield is joining a
corporation and as such
should purchase shares to
become a member.
The move to include Ash-
field came as part of a
general realignment of the
hospital board according to
referral population. The
realignment will be
presented to the annual
meeting as a notice of motion
to be voted on at the 1981
annual meeting.
According to the new
alignment a representative
will sit for Blyth, Morris and
Brussels for a two-year
term, representing 14 per
cent of the hospital's referral
population. A representative
will sit for East and West
Wawanosh and Ashfield for a
one-year term, representing
14 per cent, and another will.
sit for one year for Lucknow
and Kinloss, which have 13
per cent of the referral
population. A member will
sit for two years for
Teeswater and Culross,
which have 14 per cent of the
population referred, and
X11
.sit for a two -
representing
:r end Howick,
Or cent of the
htion.
W lditionally has
had five t sentatives on
the }hard, including
fob and one ap
point -by' `town council,
because ,originally the
hospital Was built by citizens
of the • to'gn and called
Wham General Hospital.
However ,Bili Newton,
board mutter for Howick,
pointed out there could be a
tie vote between the town
and the townships under the
present;alignment . If ever
there were an issue which
split the town and the town-
ships the hoard could be
deadlocked .because the town
has the same number of
votes as the combined town-
ships, he noted.
He also commented that
while the five people sitting
for Wingham represent only
15 per cent of the population
referred to the hospital, they

In another motion the
board adopted the method
used by most taspitals in the
province, appointing
Executive Director Norrnern
Hayes to serve as secretary
to the board. The current
secretary, John Strong, bas
indicated he will resign in
June.
