Beef up,
pork down
Pork prices continued to
slide while dairy products
continued their upward trend
last month, the Food Basket
report published by the On-
tario Federation of
Agriculture indicates.
The Food Basket shows both
the retail and farm gate prices
of a variety of foodstuffs
produced in Ontario.
The March report shows the
retail price •of pork down one
cent to $1.39 for the consumer,
while the farm gate price is
also down one cent, t 77 cents
a pound, from February's
average.
Pork producers are now
receiving 29 per cent less for
their product than they did one
year ago.
Beef prices also decreased
slightly, with the average
,price of a pound of fresh beef
'down a penny to $2.75 at the
retail level. The farm gate
price dropped three cents
the past month to 41.91 a
pound.
The retail prices of turkey
and chicken held steady at
$1.38 and $1.12 per 'pound
respectively), while eggs
dropped a cent te' $1.05 per'
dozen.
The composite price ' for
milk and cream also held
steady last month, but butter
and cheese were up three
cents a pound to $1.65 and $2.03
respectively at the retail level.
The farm gate prices for these
products held steady, however
the largest increases in farm
receipts during the last year
went to dairy farmers. Milk
prices were 13 per cent higher
in March than they had been
one year ago.
