What we have, was the theme
for The Great Canadian
Energy Show at Wingham
•Public School last week.
An interested audience of
Grade 4 to 8 students from
Turnberry and Wingham
schools got a quick history of
the development of modern
energy sources from a crew of
loveable, if somewhat ec-
centric, inventors, and in a
song at the end were urged:
"Let's change our views and
cut down waste. Our energy
can't be replaced."
The students were first
introduced to James Watt and
his steam engine, which
aliened the way for rail travel.
Next on stage Abraham
Gessner and his newfangled
invention, coal oil, sparred for
position with Captain Billy,
defender of the old lighting
standby, whale oil.
Thomas Alva Edison
revolutionized the lighting
industry with his development
of the electric light, especially
after he teamed up with genii -
hating Nikola Tesla who
developed a system of
generating electricity. They
paved the way for Sir Adam
Beck, the father of Ontario
Hydro, to light the streets of
Kitchener with power brought
from Niagara Falls.
Next the show turned to the
discovery of oil in Alberta and
the importing of oil from the
Middle East, cheaply at first
but becoming steadily more
expensive as its owners
realized the value of their
resource.
It ended with the admonition
that "we have to learn to
make the most of what we've
got" in order to buy time to

develop renewable resources.
Actors Bob Walter and Andy
Lowe of Theatre Direct
Canada, Toronto, with the
able assistance of stage
manager Jamie Brown and a
robot, Happy, did an excellent
job of combining entertain-
ment with a message. They
kept their audience's rapt
attention as they capered
from one character and scene
into the next, and more of the
questions at the end dealt with
their special effects, props
and quick costume changes
than with the content of their
show.
However the students were
quick to notice that the show
scrupulously avoided any
mention of the newest major
energy source, nuclear power.
A question why appeared to
give the actors some dif-
ficulty, however they ex-
plained the show is being
sponsored by Ontario Hydro,
which, rather than be accused
of doing propaganda fOr this
controversial power source,
preferred that they avoid the
topic entirely...

On Sunday morning Rev.
John G. Roberts of Knox
United Church, Belgrave
dedicated a pair of brass
vases placed on the com-
munion table by the family in
memory of Daniel (Danny)
Walton Lamont. That the
congregation remember with
love and kindness all good
memories of Danny was the
minister's earnest suppli-
cation.
