Mrs. William Coultes gave a report on the London confer- ence, United Church Women, which she attended and stated that UCW groups were sen- ding donations to the "Church in Society" department of the United Church, to buy seeds for Zaire. It was decided that the group would donate $10 to- ward purchasing seeds for Zaire. Mrs. Coultes also mentioned the resolution against buying lottery tickets and told of the Ontario conference for women of the United Church to be held on June 20-22 at the University of Waterloo. Mrs. Jack Taylor in' troduced the guest speaker, Mrs. Herman De Bruyn of Wkagham, who gave a most interesting account of their experiences in sponsoring a boy and a girl from Laos. Mrs. George Michie thanked Mrs. De Bruyn for giving such an interesting insight into what was involved in spon- soring people from Laos and Vietnam. Special music was provided by Mrs. William Coultes, Janice Coultes, Mrs. Glen Coultes and Mrs. Goerge Procter, accompanied by Mrs. George Johnston, who sang 'Let There Be Peace' and °He. ,Walks With Me'. Lunch and a social half hour were enjoyed at the close of the meeting. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Rintoup and Chad of ! Weekend guests at the home of Mrs. Vera Kerr were her son Luther and wife from Lachine, Quebec, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Luther Kerr's Afternoon UCW holds thankoffering The afternoon unit of the United Church Women held its Easter Thankoffering meeting on April 1. Mrs. Vera Kerr welcomed the ladies at the door. Quiet music and a short talk on the hymn, `When I Survey the Wondrous Cross', opened the meeting. All then joined in singing the hymn. Mrs. Irwin read scripture from the 23rd chapter of St. Luke's Gospel, telling about the burial of Jesus. A poem entitled `The Cross was His Own' was given by Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Bosman sang `Alone', ac- companied by Mrs. Passmore at the piano. Following the receipt of the offering and singing of `We Give Thee but Thine Own', Mrs. Thompson led in prayer. Mrs. Robert Perry of Bluevale was the guest speaker. She gave a helpful and timely talk on the joy of the Christian life. "Happiness is short-lived but joy is deep- rooted and lasting," she said. Mrs. Underwood thanked Mrs. Perry for her inspiring message. Following the singing of another hymn, Mrs. Under- wood presided for the business. Presbyterian Church, Rev. Dr. Robert H. Armstrong baptized Steven Edmund James Ernest Young, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Young. Easter floral arrangements were placed in the sanctuary by Miss Katie Steele, in memory of her mother, and by Miss Brown in memory of her aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Peebles. Mr. and Mrs. Rowland Ballagh celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary on Friday with a family dinner at their home on Catherine Street. UCW unit meets at Copeland home BELGRAVE — The Easter meeting of the after ;Iron unit of the UCW was ld at the Copeland Home, Wingham, with the seniors there as guests. To open the meeting, Mrs. Cecil Coultes chose a poem en- titled Follow Me, with Mrs. George Johnston at the organ, followed by the hymn `Rejoice the Lord is King' and prayer. Mrs. Leslie Bolt brought the Easter message. She dwelt on the Lord's supper, using the picture `Last Supper' by Da Vinci, ; which depicts the reaction of the disciples to Jesus statement, `Truly I say to you, one of you will betray me,, one who, is eating with me." Mrs. Bolt continued with a reading `Hands' then told the story of the masterpiece known as the `Praying Hands° and led in prayer. The hymn `Crown Him With Many Crowns' was sung followed by a short business period which included a thank you to Mrs. Hibberd for so ably convening for sick and shut-ins ; In his usual charming ,,manner Clark Johnston; accompanied by Mrs. John- ston, favored with a solo 'The Old Rugged Cross'. 4irs. Ross Higgins read of the resurrection, showing the disbelief among the disciples when Mary brought news of the empty tomband of having seen the Lord. When Jesus appeared before the disciples he said "Do not fear, I will be with you until the end of time, and beyond." - Another hymn was sung, then Mrs. Coultes led in the dosing prayer. An enjoyable social hour and a tour of the home-voln- pleted an uplifting and in- teresting afternoon.
