iiwmobile.club's interests go
By Terri Polillo
Although it may seem that
whiter has barely arrived,
because of late snowfalls,
believe it or not the chilly
weather is on its final stretch.
As a result it won't be long
before winter sportsmen, such
as skiers and snowmobilers,
will shift back into low gear
and wind down for the season.
But before doing that every
snowy opportunity will be
Oaken advantage of by these
residents, who have found a
way to disperse those winter
blahs and band together for
some fun. One such example
in this area is the Wingham
and District Snowmobile Club.
Two Wednesdays per month
sees many of the 136 club
members ride over to the
Turnberry Tavern for a short
business meeting.
After sitting through only a
few it becomes obvious the
snowmobilers are not in-
Dairy
terested only in cruising with
their machines, but also in
safety, club spirit, a good
reputation., having the best
trails in the grea nrui
representation on, the uruce
Regional Snowmobile Associ-
ation.
To ensure safe and
knowledgable riding the club
arranged for driver training
courses, which saw par-
ticipation from many of its
Junior club members. In
addition to that a local con-
stable showed for one of the
first meetings to give the
senior members a multiple
choice test on speeds, in-
surance and general rilleQ
be obeyed by all snowmo-
bilers. The test served as a
good reminder for the mem-
bers and helped to open the
season with safety in mind.
Many non-members tend to
think that organizations such
as a snowmobile club are

active solely during winter
months, Not so in this area.
Two public dances, one in the
spring and the other in the fall,
are organized every year,
together with a summer
barbeque, a winter poker rah)

Whipper Watson's .. Snowa-
rama for Timmy.
Although this year's snowa-
rama was plagued with little
snow and a postponement,
club members maintained
optimism and before the big
day arrived had groomed and
marked their trails better
than in previous years and
managed to arrange for over
$5,000 worth of pledges.
The number of riders who
left Wingham that day totalled
69; about 95 per cent belonged
to the local club.
It may have been a long 100
miles, but most agreed it was
worth every one. Gliding
along the trails one was
treated to a variety of
scenery. Through the
cooperation of landowners and
the hard work of club mem-
bers working r the trails,
sections ranging from open
fields to forested areas were
linked together forming the
run. And although winds
managed to kick up a bit of a
fuss on some of the fields the
weather was ideal.
But good snowmobiling and
a lot of full isn't the only
consequence of participating
in any snowarama. By raising
funds for Ontario's crippled
children a club's spirit rides
high and its public image is
given a positive boost.
Local residents, who may
not be interested in the sport,
may suddenly realize that
snowmobiles can come in
handy. This may be high-
lighted even more during a
bad storm, when club
members are called out for
