Despite unpleasant weather the Wingham Ladies' Bonspiel went ahead as scheduled on Feb. 27. aue winners of the Harley Crawford Trophy were the team from Kincardine, Norrie Dickson, Betty Hunter, Carol Quinn • and Gwen MacArthur. In the 9 a.m. draw the Mary Hawn rink of Kincardine was first, the Nora Stephenson rink of Brussels was second and the Shirley Boyd rink from Listowel placed third. The trophy winning Dickson rink was first in the 11 a.m. draw, with the Carol Davison rink of Exeter placing second and the Jean MacDonald rink from Belmore finishing third. On Feb. 20 playoffs were held in the ladies' round robin play. The team of Ene McGregor, Marlene Leedham, Doris Remington and Joan Crawford were the winners otthe 9:30 a.m. draw and the President's Trophy. That group defeated the team of Sheila Cameron, Mary Treleaven, Ethna Hill and Lorraine Clugston, winners of the 1:30 p.m. draw, in an exciting game that required an extra end to determine the winners. Prizes will be awarded at the . ladies' lun- cheon on March 5. The rink of Keith Elston, Al Williams, Neil Hemingway r MRS. GEORGE BROWN and John Strong won the Stanley Door System Trophy on Feb. 25 in the men's playoffs. Lloyd Casemore, Jim Watt and Ron Clarkson were second and the team of Lloyd Carter, Roy Bennett, Peter Day and Paul Kenyon finished third. In mixed curling, a short four-week draw in January was held. There were no prizes awarded, but congratulations are extended to the winners. Bill Stephenson, Eileen Sellers, Bob Gillespie and .Carole Richards were winners in the Tuesday draw. On Thursday evening the teams of Bill Hanula, Donalda Pearson, Jane Treleaven and Louise Stainton were tied with Neil Hemingway, Muriel Grum- met, Ross Davis and Mary Ann Cruickshank for first place. - On Friday evening winners of the 7:15 p.m. draw .were Stewart Leedham, Ruth Orion, Harold Wild and Diane Collyer. In the 9:15 p.m. draw John Cruickshank, Lillian Stephenson, Nelson Hill and Colleen Schenk were winners. The final draw in mixed curling continues until March 28 with playoffs to be held on March 30. Recent winners in the Wingham Golf and Curling Club lottery were John Mallet of Wingham and Elaine Butrand of Goderich. Margaret Mundell did the same bowling a 320 and Catherine Campbell, 400. The Hummingbirds are in first place with 75 points while the -Cardinals sit in second with 66. The Wrens• are next with 64 followed by the Hawks, 48; Canaries, 46 and Robins, 32. COFFEE KLATCH Shirley Storey bowled a super game for the high single with a 298 score. Other ladies bowling 200 -point games and over were Jean King, 219 and 281, and Ada Aitchison, 226. Rev. Dr. Armstrong resigns from committee The regular meeting of the First Wingham Scout Group Committee was held on Sunday evening. A letter of resignation was accepted from Rev. Dr. Arm- strong. Mr. Armstrong has been chaplain for the Scouts for several years and has been active on the group com- mittee. The secretary was instructed to contact the Wingham Ministerial Association asking its mem- bers to appoint a replacement. Treasurer Byron Adams was pleased to present the committee with a cheque for $200 from . the Wingham Centennial Committee. The money will be put towards the Jamboree Fund. Betty Heard reported that 24 Cubs, three Scouts andfive. leaders had gone to Vanastra to swim last Friday evening. Three Cub leaders, Wilson Daw, Murray Underwood and Betty Heard, had taken the Wood Badge, Part 1 in Strat- COMMERCIAL LEAGUE Verna Haugh topped the ladies with a 309 for the high single and 746 for the triple. Kevin Hickey captured the men's single with 294 and Bob Pegg totalled 749 for the triple. Esther's Elkhounds and Isobel's Irish Setters are tied for first with 94 points each. while Sheila's Schnauzers sit in second with 80. Gayle's Greyhounds are next with 79 followed by Brenda's Blood- hounds, 68 and Marlene's Malamytes, 62. Those with scores of 200 points or more were Esther Thynne, 230 and 228; Jim Griffith, 235 and 215; Bob Pegg, 222, 281 and 246; Leon ford over the weekend. Chair- man Rick Whiteley com- mended the leaders for taking two days of their own time to take this advanced training. Part 2 of this course will be offered at a later date. It was noted that it would be a week - !ono course and some . of the expenses should be defrayed by the organization. Scouter Marty Cretier announced that the Scouts would be having a winter camp on March 14-16 at Silver Lake. Each patrol will be responsible for its own transportation. May 3 is the date for the spring paper drive. It was decided that Belgrave, Wl4itechurch and Bluevale will be canvassed the same day. The community is urged to save papers as the group would like to see a a full truck load. Sheri Walden bowled a 219 decision over . the Wingham Lions in an exhibition hockey game here Sunday afternoon. Mery Storey scored the other Ripley goal while Dan Martin and Bill Brophy replied for Wingham. The Lions opened a two -out - of -three WOAA playoff series Tuesday at Seaforth. The second game of the series is Thursday at Wingham star- ting at 8 p.m: , Bridge results, Lillian Brooks and Norma Parker were , first -place winners in last week's duplicate bridge with Margaret Kelly and Gordon Rutledge placing second. Seniors' euchre There were seven tables in play at the senior citizens' euchre party on ^Feb. 28. The high lady ,was Mary Austin and Verena 'Bone, playing as a man, wall high man. The low score was, by Olive Walker and the lady with the most tricks, with the nine of hearts, was Irene Bagman. The man with the most tricks, also with the nine of hearts, was Fred Porter. Poker Rally has Targe turnout The Wingham Snowmobile Club held a successful Poker Rally on March 2. About 240 poker hands were sold to local and out-of-town riders from Teeswater, St. Helens and other area clubs. The 30 -mile run, under blue skies, began at 12 noon. Syd Thompson won $50 for the high poker hand while Doug Brown received $25 for second place. In third was Gerald Luch, $15; CaiineronRoss, $10, and Doris Hodges, $5.00. Together with these there were 40 draw prizes, which were donated bylocal businesses. Hungry snowmobilers were treated to hamburgers and hot chocolate at the half -way point. That booth was set up by the local Air Cadets. Club President Bill Crump noted, "It was the biggest turnout we ever had for a Poker Rally." The club's next social event will be a dance at the Ar- mouries on March 22 at 9 p.m. Music will be provided by Nite Lites. The grades five and. six said their speeches first followed by the grades seven and eight. The first place for the grades five and six was taken by Greg Gedeke and the second place by Peggy Hohenadel. The two runners up were Stephanie Long and Kris Baumgarten. There were nine speakers from the grades 5 and 6 area, and eight speakers from -the grades 7 and 8 area. The speeches had to be from three. to five minutes in length, memorized; and suited to the speaker's age and back,- ground. ack-ground. The speeches were all excellent, and I pity the judges, who were, by the way Wesley Bali, Jr., Mrs. Jacque- line Gowdy, and Rev. Bert Vaneook.
