year with new officers

fkat meting of the new year in
he' upper room on Wednesday,
d .iluary 9.
President Mrs. R. H. Arm-
strong opened the meeting with a
New Year message and following
the singing off a hymn she led in
prayer. Mrs. Gordon Wall read
scripture, Psalm 91. She also
gave the meditation entitled
"Keeping Care of God for the
Coming Year". Mrs. J. Conn led
in prayer and a minute's silence
was observed in memory of
former members Mrs. J. McGee
and Mrs. E. Welwood who passed
away last year. -
The offering was received by
Mrs. Wall and dedicated by Mrs.
R. McKay. Mrs. W. Ford played
two - beautiful „ piano selections
and Mrs. Armstrong conducted a
study on "Dimensions of Human
Rights": The singing of a hymn
closed the, worship service.
Secretary Mrs. McKay read
the minutes, correspondence and
roll call was taken. Mrs. Wall
then gave the treasurer's report.
Mrs. Armstrong installed the
executive %committee for 1980:

FAMILY AND FRIENDS gathered. at Trinity Lutheran -
Church, Ayton, on November 24 to witness the vows of.
Linda Becker and Douglas David. The bride is the daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Becker; Ayton. Parents of the groom
are Mrs. Recta David of Aytpp and Edward Davld of
Durham. The David family formerly resided near
Wroxeter. The couple now reside in London.

Ford wick unit meeting
has New Year's theme
FORDWICH=President Mrs.
Eva Harris opened the meeting
with a recipe for the new year
when the evening unit of the
United Church Women met in the
church on January 9. Throughout
the meeting, the New Year's
theme prevailed.
Following the singing of a
hymn and prayer, the roll call
was answered by 12 members
and Rev. T. Fleetham,„ Each
member had been asked to bring
a get -well or sympathy card to
the meeting.
The worship service was
conducted by Mrs. Diane Mann
and. Mrs... Ron Livermore. A
hymn was sung and everyone
repeated the Apostles' Creed.
Thescripture was taken from St.
Luke's Gospel and their thoughts
centred around the new year. The
worship service closed with a
hymn and prayer by',Mrs.
Livermore.
Mrs. Harris conducted the
business and the treasurer and
year. Mrs. Murray Donaldson's '
group will cater for the Optimist
Club suppiT in February. A
motion was also made to send the
group's foster child a gift.
Mrs. Edith Gibson was named
the 1980 secretary for the group.
The next meeting will be held at
Mrs. Harris' home and volun-
teer§ offered to prepare the
meeting 'until the new programs
arerplanned •
The program committee, Mrs.
Florence D'Arcey and Mrs.
Nellie Allan, also chose the new
year for their topic. New Year's
resolutions were mainly in their
thoughts. Mrs. D'Arcey read a
poem, "Gold in each Season",
followed by a hymn and prayer.
The ladies read several stories
and poems about new year
resolutions that can be and have
been made. Mrs. D'Arcey closed
the program portion with a hymn,
and a prayer. The featurewas' a
Bible quiz by Mrs. Cecil Wilson.

hosts unit meeting
BRUSSELS—On Tuesday, Jan-
uary 8, the members Of the after
noon unit of the United Church
Women were entertained at the
home of Mrs. Norman Hoover.
There were 17 members present
alt this first meeting of the year.
The leader, Mrs. Cudmore,
read an appropriate poem for -the
new year, followed by "A New
Leader's Prayer". In the absence
of Mrs. Hazelwood, Mrs. Ruth
Hupfer convened devotions.
Following the singing of an
opening hymn the group read
Psalm 1 responsively. That
scripture passage was also the
Bible study of the month. Mrs.
Steffler offered thoughts for the
new year and Mrs. Hupfer led in
prayer followed by group
discussion on Psalm 1.
A study of Japan was in-
troduced by Mrs. Steffler. She
explained that, previous to World
War II, Japanese products were
considered to be poor quality.
Since that time the reverse is
true and now -, manufactured
goods such as televisions, radios,
'cameras, etc., are of superior
quality.
Industry has created pollution
and other problems in Japan. The
country has the fastest trains in
the world which transport
masses of people. Just one per
cent of the population is Christian
and yet the Christians receive
respect from those who practise
other religions.
During the roll call, 43
visitations Avere recorded.
visitation to the nursing; home

Knitting and crocheting classes
will be held at the home of Mrs.
Mary Thomas. Anyone wishing to
participate should contact Mrs.
Robert Richmond.
Following a closing prayer,
refreshments were served.
