For four years following his •
accident, he was bedridden in a
chronic care ward ar an Owen
Sound hospital. It was here that
someone suggested he start
sketching by holding a,pencil in
his. mouth.
"I thought they were crazy,"
he said. But he gave it a try and
quickly mastered a technique:
Today, his most noted work is
the Old Mill, which took almost
two weeks to complete and is on
the cover of the Ontario March of
Dimes annual report.
A limited edition of the Old Mill
has been reprinted by the
organization and is on sale for
$10. After Costs, proceeds of print
sale go to Alfie to supplement his
disability pension. Doreen quit
work about six years ago, when
Attie developed- diabetes.
Alfie said he got the idea for
this sketch and numerous others
from pictures, photographs, and
drives through the countryside.
Since the mill print, he has been
commissioned by several people
to do sketches. This, along with
recent lessons in oil painting -
should keep him busy during the
winter months, when the snow
keeps him indoors.

Residents off Turnberry
Township requesting road allow-
ance closings will find tha n-
selves paying a $200 deposit
beofore legal procedures com-
mence.
Council .decided during last
week's meting that the deposit
will be rgquir&t- along with a
signed application form regar-
ding road closings. However any
overpayment existing, after the
deeds have been registered, will
be refunded without interest. The
township clerk, Dorothy Kelly,
was authorized by council to
revise the check list for closings
into application forms. In the
past residents were billed after
legal work had been completed
by the township solicitor.
In other business council en-
tered a heated discussion after
Deputy Reeve Harold Ellitatt,
who sits on the hospital board,
asked, "Is there a township
representative on the hospital
board?" .Mr.. ,Elliott. was
referring to a bylaw passed last
month stating that only those
nominated or recommended by
council to serve on committees,
should be paid by the township
for their services.
He explained that according to
the board's lawyer. Jack Good-
all. Mr. Elliott is the township
representative.`
Reeve Don Eadie stated, "it .is
the feeling of this.council that you
were not elected by the people of
.:tile later explanted
that legally Mr. Elliott is a
representative of the township,
however since he was not
counclPs choice to sit on.the hos-
pital board, he is not council's
representative.
During the discussion Coun-
cillor Brian McBurney argued
that Mr. Elliott did not give the
township reports on the hospital
board meetings. "1 gave you one
a year ago, ' insisted Mr. Elliott.
Referring to last month's
bylaw Councillor ‘Doug Fortune
stated firmly to Mr. Elliott, "Tice
motion was passed so that only
meinbers nominated or
recommended by council will be
paid. You don't fall into that
category!"
"You were nominated by two
members of the board, not
council," added Councillor Ben
Malda
According to Mr. Eadie before
elections took place at the hos-
pital board's annual- meeting,
held last spring; Mr. Elliott
suggested .to council that he
would step down from the board
if anyone else were interested in
taking his place. As a result the
township , nominated Louise
Marritt to sit on "the board.
However during the annual
meeting Mr. Elliott, Was
nominated by two members from
the floor. who were not from
- Turnberry Township. and he
'eventually defeated Mrs. Marritt
