Natural Resources in conjunction with the Huron County Board of • `Education. Joan Bern of Usborne Central School received the first prize school. trophy plus a take-home trophy and a book. Also receiving books were second prize' winner Nancy Henry of Turnberry Central School and .third prize winner 'Lisa Rundle of Usborne Central. All are Grade 8 students: Respective essaytopics of the three winners were 'The Life of a Raccoon', 'As I Walked Through a the Woods Today' and 'The Beaver'. Runners up in the contest in- clude Kim Stephenson and Greg Higgins of Brussels Public School and Rick Night of Grey. Central. Participating students from Grades 7 and 8 chose from topics selected by'ministry staff. Topics dealt with such programs as forest resou ces,' provincial perks, fisheries, wildlife and mineral resources. This essay contest is the first such program in the ' Wingham district. Mrs. Alex Graham reported on the decorating of the large natural Christmas tree in the village and Mrs. Melville Dennis spoke on ,the proposed project of erecting street name signs in Gorrie which! the Institute is considering as , one of its com- munity interests. Mrs. Robert Elschner passed numbers for the Christmas tree gifts .and each member and her guests received one. Mrs. Allan Hyndman expressed thanks on behalf of the invited guests for including them' in the Chi' istmas dinner and program and Mrs. Alex Taylor seconded the motion. The Christmas party was over for 1979. Christmas eve service held at United Church GORRIE—The Christmas; Eve service was held in the United _church at 8 p.m. with Rev. Ernest Fellows in charge of the meditation. The, scripture reading from Luke nd Matthew was read by Philip Gowdy. Wayne• Brown lit the first candle. The choir sang 'A Star in the Night' with Mrs. Sheldon Mann at the organ. 'While Shepherds Watched Their Flocks by Night' was also sung.. A recitation "He Was Special" was given by Cindy Newton followed by action rhymes and then carol singing by everyone with Mrs. Leone Kaster at the piano. A play, "Waiting for the Bus", by Mrs. Doreen Wintemute's class and a piano solo by Kendra Statia was followed by step danc- ing, with Mrs. Ethel McMichael on.violin and Art Gibson on piano, by the ,McMichael Sisters. A recitation, "Love Joy, Cheer" by Stephen Mellinger, John Nelder and Seriy Moore from Lynda and MaryBeth Riley's class was fol- lowed by a piano solo by Shelley.' Statia. Mary Beth and Lynda's pupils, Kyle -Wheeler, Tania Bait - ley, Jenny McLean, Jason Edgar, Sally Filsinger; .Jack Bolding and Sarah Bolding; gave a :recitation, "Wise ; Men" • and .,. ,1Vfrs. ESSAY CONTEST -Nancy Henry of Turnberry Central School placed second out of all students around the district in an essay contest sponsored bf the Iocal-office of the Minis- try of Natural Resources. Sandra Currie and Blake Evans,of the MNR attended an as- sembly at the school to present the prize, a.„book on' birds of Canada.
