Born in Howick Township, Miss Irwin is the daugh- ter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Irwin. While she owns her own home in Gorrie, Miss Irwin now spends most of her time with her grand -niece Mrs. Bower (Helen) Parrish of North Bay. Neighbors recall that up until a few years ago, Emma Irwin and her sister could be seen chopping their own wood. Longevity apparently runs in the Irwin family; Emma's father died when he was 95 and her sister died when she was 92. Asked the secret of her long life, Miss Irwin replied "hard work". Above she admires a congratulatory plaque received from the government.
