CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY—Miss Emma Irwin was honored at an open house
held Saturday, Dec. 9, in the Gorrie United Church on the occasion of her 100th birthday
which she actually marked on Dec. 7. Born in Howick Township, Miss Irwin is the daugh-
ter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Irwin. While she owns her own home in Gorrie, Miss
Irwin now spends most of her time with her grand -niece Mrs. Bower (Helen) Parrish of
North Bay. Neighbors recall that up until a few years ago, Emma Irwin and her sister
could be seen chopping their own wood. Longevity apparently runs in the Irwin family;
Emma's father died when he was 95 and her sister died when she was 92. Asked the secret
of her long life, Miss Irwin replied "hard work". Above she admires a congratulatory
plaque received from the government. (Staff Photo)
Keeping Christmas
Belmore WMS topic
BELMORE — "Let Us Keep
Christmas" was the poem read
by Mrs. Ralph Dickson to open
the December meeting of the Wo-
men's Missionary Society, Knox
Presbyterian Church, Belmore.
Fifteen ladies present.proceeded
to do just that by singing the
carols, "See Amid the Winter's
Snow", and, "Infant Holy, Infant
Lowly".
Pers. Elmer Jeffray led the
devotions,based on the Christmas
story as recorded in the gospel of
Luke. Each member contributed
a short poem, story or article on
the Christmas theme, ranging
from practical advice, nostalgic
- Memories and inspirational
thoughts to a humorous list of
gifts that every woman wants,
concluding with a plea for a true
evaluation'' of Christmas • as: the
birthday of the Christ.
