Jim McGee scored three goals
and assisted on three others as
the Ironmen skated to a 13-5
victory over the Fergus Green
Machine in a game at the
Wingham arena Sunday; It was a
surprising otltcoine as the game
was expected to be much closer,
however the Irpnmen capitalized
on Fergus penalties as they
scored 10 powerplay goals.
In the first period the game
was very close, with the Ironmen
up by two goals going, into the
dressing room. There were seven
minor penalties in the period,
none of which led tiny scoring,
The game became chippy in
the second period, resulting in
the ejection of two Fergus
players. A total of 106 minutes in
penalties was assessed in the'
game, 34 for the lawmen and 72
to the Green Machine.
Dale Morrison opened the
scoring for Fergus at the 6:45
mark of the first period when he
broke in on a two -on -one. Both
defencemen tried to take out
Paul Gear, who then passed to
Morrison and Morrison fired the
shot home for the .score.
Late in the period the Ironmen
got untracked and counted three
goals in a two and a half minute
span to take a 3-1 lead into the
dressing room. Bernie Haines.
poked in the rebound of a shot, by
Jim McGee to tie the score at one
apiece at 16:23. Twelve seconds
later McGee scored a picture
goal as he made a neat move
around a defenceman, faked the
goalie to the ice and backhanded
the puck past him. Jim Blackwell
made it 3-1 when he carried the
puck over the blueline and
blasted a quick shot to goaltender
Johnson's glove side, surprising '\
him on the play.
In the second period the
powerplay units took over and at
the 2:56 mark Bernie Haines
scored when he drilled a shot
from the blueline through a maze
of players. Ed Haines had taken a
shot from the other point and
when the rebound went wide
 Ironmen run streak to nine
with win over Southampton
The Wingham lawmen ex-
tended their unbeaten streak to
nine games as they swmaped the
Southampton Mariners ' 9-1 in
Southampton Friday night. This
appeared to be the best game the
team has played to date. The
Ironmen displayed tight
checking which inhibited the
. Mariner attack and from the
outset displayed a very con-
trolled, disciplined game,
making very few mistakes.
Scott Wheeler led the Ironmen
attack with two goals and one
assist as the Ironmen fired a hail
of shots at the hapless goalten-
der. If Mariner goalie Ken
Dousette had received any help
from his defence he could have
had a shutout, however he
seldom had anyone backing Flim
up as Ironmen completely
controlled the play. ,
Dousette kept the Ironmen off
the scoresheet until the 7:04
mark of the first period, when
Wheeler took a pass from Rick
MacLennan and , moved across
the Mariner blueline in a two -on -
one break. With the defenceman
backing up, he fired a shot from
the right faceoff circle, beating
Dousette to the glove side.
Forty two seconds later Jim
McGee "increased the lead when
he scored after carrying the puck
behind the net. He moved out in
front and, after Dousette made
the initial save, slapped in his
own rebound. The score after 20
minutes of play was Ironmen.
two, Mariners no score.
In the second period them
Ironen struck for four more
goals as they continued to take
the game away from the
Mariners. Dave Kieffer made it
3-0 when Tom Graham won a
'faceoff deep in Mariner territory
and Kieffer drilled the puck past
Dousette. The Ironmen clicked
with two quick goals in a 31.
;,second span. Gord Kinahan was
just returning to play after
serving a two minute minor when
he stole the puck at the Mariner
blueline and blasted a shot past
Dousette. Then it was Wheeler's
turn, as he redirected a shot by
Dale Whitfield.
At the 16 minute mark Bernie
Haines scored on the powerplay
when Ed Haines fired a shot from
the left point that went ,wide to
the corner. The puck came back
to the right point where Bernie`
picked it up, moved to the right
corner maneuvering around a
defenceman and beat Dousette
with a quick shot to the 'short
side. The period ended with the
Ironmen up 6-0.
In the early stages of the third
:.period Dousette`was .able to keep
d the Ironmen off the scoresheet,
but as they continued to press
their efforts paid off. Ed Haines
scored at the nine minute mark
when he -fired a hard, rising shot
that flipped out of Dousette's
•
glove and into the net. This was'
;perhaps the only goal Dousette-"
could be: faulted on, as he did
everything but stand on his head'
to keep his team in' the 'game.
However they weren't up to the
grade and no matter what he did
he 'couldn't win the game by
himself.
The Ironmen scored two late
goals on powerplays as the game
wound down. Jim Blackwell fired
a wrist shot from the slot to make
the score 8-0 at 15:04 and at 18:00'
Randy Alton scored with a shot
that was almost an instant replay
of the Blackwell goal.
With just over a minute
remaining Mike Huber broke
through the Ironmen defence and
ripped a quick wrist shot through
Steve DeJong's pads to spoil his
shutout.
DeJorlg put in a solid per-
formance in net for the Ironmen:
Althoughhe wasn't overly busy
he was forced to make a number
of key saves early in the game
when the score was much closer.
He made a great glove save in the
second period`when the score was
3-0 as he stopped Huber, who
broke in alone.
The offence counted four
powerplay goals on six man -
advantage opportunities and the
defence gave up no goals on
seven man -short situations.
Juves split series
against Kincardine
The Wingham Juvenile hockey
team visited Kincardine
Saturday night and suffered a 4-2
loss to the hard-hitting Kin-
cardine team. However that
defeat was avenged with a 5-2 win
over that same team in a return
match here Sunday.
There was no scoring in
Saturday night's game until the
second period, with good
goaltending at both ends. Kin-
cardine's Rodger Campbell
opened the scoring with a minute
and a half remaining in' the
second and the period ended with
that team up 1-0.
Ed Haines evened the score for
Wingham at 10:45 of the third
period, but Kincardine stormed
back with three goals to wrap up
the game. Haines scored his
second goal of the night with just
50 seconds left in the game.
Sunday evening Kincardine
came . to Wingham and the local
boys were ready. Stan Stapleton
opened the scoring for Wingham,
assisted by Murray Gardner.
John Lawrence tied the game for
Kincardine two minutes later and
the first period ended in a 1-1
deadlock.
Mark Passmore scored the
only goal of the second period to
put Wingham up 2-1. Kincardine
tied the game again at 11:25 of
the third, but the hometown boys
bounced back with goals by Tom
McLean, Passmore and Kevin
Carter to make the final score 5-2
for Wingham.
The next home game for the
team will be this Sunday, Dec. 3,
when the Ripley Juveniles come
to town.

At the 14:19 mark Blackwell

took a shot that Johnson kicked
out, but Tom °;Graham was there
to make the score 6-3.
Twenty five seconds later
McGee clicked for the hat trick
when the Ironmenbroke in with a'
three -on -two. The goal was the
result of a great three-way
passing play. Blackwell carried
the puck over the line and, as the
first defender took him out; he
passed to Graham. The second
defenceman moved for him and,
as he did, Graham 'passed off to
McGee who fired a wrist shot
past Johnson.
At 16:01 Gear pulled the Green
Machine to within three as he
fired a quick shot that beat
Taylor up high. Dale Whitfield
scored at 17:48 to give the
Ironmen a four goal bulge after
two periods of play. Ed Haines
