LIONS' CANDY CANE CAPER
The Wingham Lions Club are
taking on a new project this year.
On Monday night Nov. 20 the
Wingham Lions will be selling
candies in Christmas tubular
plastic cane shaped containers.
These containers are made in a
handicapped workshop known as
P.R.I.D.E. Canes sell for $2 each.
A draw for giant candy cane will
be held in early Dec. Now on dis-
play at Lion Archie Hill's Shoe
Store. Tickets 50 cents or 3 for $1.

to present
contest awards
Noted Canadian authors Harry
Boyle and John Smallbridge will
present prizes totalling $1500 at
the annual awards ceremony for
the Dorothy Shoemaker Literary
Contest November 24. The cere-
mony, which takes place at the
Central (Galt) branch of the
Cambridge public library at 7:30
p.m., concludes this year's con-
test in which more than 600
people submitted prose and poe-
try entries.
The contest is sponsored by
participating public libraries in
the Midwestern library system.
Midwestern co-ordinates ser-
vices for public libraries in the
region of Waterloo and in Perth,
Huron and Wellington counties.
Mr. Boyle, former chairman of
the Canadian Radio Television
and Telecommunications Com-
mission and two-time winner of
the Stephen Leacock award for
humour, is the author of The
Luck of the Irish, The Great
Canadian Novel and numerous
other novels, essays and plays.
He is an officer of the Order of
Canada and is presently a
columnist with the Montreal
Star. He is a native of Wingham,
Ontario. He is judging the prose
entries.
Mr. Smallbridge, chairman of
the English department at
Althouse College of Education
and 1969 winner of the Massey
Collect poetr r t, is judging
the etry ent He is the
author of the English textbook
Language Comes Alive and has
had his poetry published in the
Trinity Review and a collection
entitled Made in Canada : New
Poems of the Seventies.
This is the third year that the
Dorothy Shoemaker contest has
been hosted by public libraries of
the Midwestern library system.
Named hi recognition of a former
chief librarian at Kitchener pub-
lic library, the contest was for-
merly sponsored by that library.
We wish to thank our family
