CANADIAN FOOTBALL LEAGUE PLAYERS' ASSOCIATION GAME Prnn (cICOPYRIGt1T.1977 SUN SYNQICATE Ca+ PLAYERS THE OFFENSIVE LINEMAN by LAYNE McDOWELL BC LIONS THE SHOULDER BLOCK The first step taken at the snap off the ball should be a short one with the staggered foot to bring it slightly ahead of the other. When doing this the back should remain straight, and the head should be looking up with the neck "bulled". If you raise up you send your power upward instead of forward at your target. The second step should be the beginning of your uncoil. It should also be a short chopping step. The forearm starts its motion now and contact is generally made by the end of the second step. Once contact has been made you should start straightening out your hips and legs and ex- tending your body using its leverage. The third and fourth steps are short driving steps and are very crucial to the success of the block. PULL AND TRAP BLOOK The first key to a good Pull or Trap Block is not to tip off the Defensive line with any alternation in your previous balanced stance. The eyes will also tip off an alert defensive man to the direction of trap or pull. A) The first moiyement of a pull or trap block is to throw the closest arm to the hole (point of attack) back so that your body is pointing in the direction of the desired block, simultaneously your closest foot to the hole will be your lead step, preferably a short job, getting your power from your rear leg in the second step. ILLUSTRATIONS BY DICK GIBSON CLIP AND SAVE r The Wingham Advance -Times, Dece 14,1972M Weekend games split for Royals and Lancers The Wingham Royals defeated the Lucknow Lancers 7-6 Friday night at the Wingham Arena, but lost 7,-3 on five third period Lanc- er goals Sunday in Lucknow. In Friday's game, Bill Brown scored three goals and Bill Kerr added a pair to lead the Royals to victory in the Friday contest. Lucknow opened the scoring at the 1:2 mark of the first period on a goal by Greg Hamilton from Kevin Murray. The Royals' Mur- ray Black replied a minute later on a play set up by Ross Davies and Paul McKee. Bill Brown orl hip ref of the night from Al Dickson and Neil Bieman ,to give the Royals a one goal lead. Dickson set up Brown again be- fore the end of the period and the Royals led 3-1 at the end of the first frame. Early in the second period Wingham's hard-working centre, Wingham Ironmen on winning streak ages in the league for the top three teams are as follows: Wingham 25; Arthur 50; Fergus 51. The defensive play of the Iron - men is really holding its own and is one of the interesting points to watch in the Ironmen games. The Wingham Ironmen defeat- ed the Wiarton Dynamos Sunday night to make it five wins in a row. The only goal of the first period was at 5:06 -when a power play goal scored by Dave Keiffer and assisted by Gord Kinahan and Jay MacLaurin went by the Wiarton goalie. Second period goals were by Ron Riley with as- sist from Dave Keiffer and Cam Cook; Keven Carter also scored on a nice play set up by Jim Blackwell and Gord Kinahan. Another power play goal at 15:47 of the third period saw Wingham with a 4-0 lead, this goal by Dale Whitfield and Hugh. Nichol, playing a steady game in net for the Ironmen, saw his bid for a shut -out go by him with a slap shot from the point by Wiar- ton captain Chuck Jones with only 54 seconds left in the game. I can't write about this game without commenting on the out- standing job the Wiarton goalie, Jerrie Lanarie did for his team. He averaged about 20 shots on goal in each period and all he let in was four — great effort. Three Stars for the night: 1st, Gord Kinahan, Ironmen; 2nd, Jerrie Lanarie, Dynamos; 3rd, Hugh Nichol, Ironmen. .. Bill Kerr, ended his season lo scoring drought by ng his of the year from Tom McLean and Murray Black. At 7:19 of the period it was Kerr again giving the Royals,a commanding five. to one lead. Lucknow closed the gap to 5-3 on goals by Tom Peterson and Kevin Murray but Bill Brown fired an unassisted goal giving the Royals a l-3 lead. Thirty seconds later, with the Royals shorthanded, Wingham' "road runner", Al Dickson, picked up a loose puck at centre ice, skated by several Lucknow attackers, deked Lucknow goalie Gary Sut- ton and rifled the puck into the net, giving the Royals a com- manding 7-3 lead at the end of the second period. The first half of the third period saw the Royals play a very close checking brand of hockey but at 9:01 of the period some defensive lapses set up a Lancer score by Graham Hamilton. Three minutes later Kevin Murray beat Royals' goalie Paul Helfer with a low drive and only nine seconds later Carl Stanley picked up another bad clearing pass and put it in the net, limiting the Royal lead to one goal. However,, for the last five minutes the Royal defense with- stood the Lancer attacks and the game ended with the Royals corning up with a 7-6 victory. firing ng In Sunday's game in Luck - first now, the Lancers scored five goals in the third period to defeat the Royals 7-3. Bob Armstrong gave the Royals a 1-0 lead at the 1:2 mark of the first period with his first of three goals. Doug Stevenson tied it for Lucknow at 13:46 and fhle period ended at one all. Arnlstrong scored again at 2:59 of the second with assists to Mur- ray Black and Tom McLean. The Royals went ahead' 3-1 as Arm- stong connected from Black and Paul McKee. Mark Chisholm drew the Lancers to within one but the Royals left .the ice at the end of the second leading 3-2. The third period saw the Lancers hit the ice withal] kinds of enthusiasm and they scored no less than five goals to seal the win. Carl Stanley and have McKinnon each scored twice and Mark Chisholm added the single. Final score Lucknow Lancers, 7, Wingham Royals 3. 0-0-0 From the stands ... This was a big win for the Royals -ending a six game winless streak ... Once again it was the defense which was somewhat suspect, although junior recruit Bernie Haines and Royal policeman Tom Irvin did play fine games ... Nice to see the checking line — Bill Kerr, Murray Black and Tom McLean scoring goals as their line came up with no less than 3 of the 7 goals ... Bill Brown continued to score goals handily as he registered another hat trick but Al Dickson scored one of the pret- tiest goals that has been scored in the Wingham Arena in a long time on his solo effort in the se- cond period ... The Royals found themselves somewhat short-staf- fed as Bob Hillis and Tom Black fell victims to the storm... Three stars for the Royals in this game Bill Brown, Al Dickson and Bill Kerr . . .The Royals begin a month long road trip and do not play at home again until January 6, 1978, when those dynamic Port Elgin Sunocos are in town. 0-0-0 From the stands ... this, like Friday night's game, was a clearly played contest with: only 14 minutes in penalties as both teams stuck strictly to hockey . , . This was Bob Armstrong's finest performance in a Royals' uni- form as he scored all three goals in a losing cause ... Remember next home game is January 6 against Port Elgin. The Wingham Royals players and executive would lilie to wish all their sup- porters a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
