Dean Symons scored five goals
to lead the league — leading Port
Elgin Sunoeos to a 10-1 victory
over Wingham Royals in an OHA
Intermediate "C" -hockey game
In the Wingham Arena, Friday
night.
For the first 10 minutes of the
first period the Royals checked
the Sunocos very closely but
Symons was too much to watch
and he broke loose to score three
goals, giving the Sunocos a 3-0
lead at the end of the first period.
One minute into the second
period it was Symons again,
giving Port a 4-0 lead. The
Royals' big cornerman, Niel. Rie-
man, scored at 4:02 of the period
assisted by Murray Black, to
narrow the gap to 4-1. However,
that was as close as it ever got.
Former Wingham Ironmen
captain Murray McKague upped
the score to 5-1 before Symons
scored his fifth of the night, At
this point Symons was ejected
from the game and the Royals

breathed a slight sigh of relief.

in on the Royal goal and goals by
Rick Watters and John Howe
made the score 8-1 at the end of
the second period.
The third period was much like
the second as Royal goaltender
Paul Heffer must have felt like a
lame duck during hunting season.
The Sunocos took shot after shot
`at the Wingham goal and this
period -long barrage resulted in
two.mgre goals — Rick Ens scor-
ing the ninth Sunoco marker and
ex -pro Ted Scharf evened the
Port Elgin count at 10. Final
score — Port Elgin Sunocos 10,
Wingham Royals 1.
FROM THE STANDS ... The
Sunocos certainly left no doubt in
the minds of the Royal players
and fans that they are the cream
of the league. They play every
aspect of the game — skating,
shooting, and checking — with
machine -like rhythm. The crowd
on hand could not help but be
impressed with the scoring
ability of Dean Symons, as the
Port Elgin shooter sealed the
Royal's fate early in the game .. .
The Royals tempo seemed to be
set early with Ted Ahara's rendi-
tion of the National Anthem
characterizing the play of many
of the Royals' forwards.
The Royals shyed away. from
the body contact, but Royal
policeman Tom Irwin, the
Blacks, Murray and Tom, Niel
Bieman and Bill Kerr did do
some fine hitting .. .
The three Royal stars in this
game — Tom Irwin, Niel : ieman,
and Bill Kerr .. .
The Royals go on a road trip
this weekend but next home
game will be Friday, Dec. 9 when
they host the Lucknow Lancers.
Player
of the week
This week's player is Gord
Kinahan. Gord is 17 years old and
says he doesn't have a nickname,
but that could easily change be-
fore the season is over.
Gord is in his first of Junior
hockey but. has played with the
team on a part time basis for two.
years now, while he was of mid-
get age. In his first full year as an
Ironmen, Gord has been ap-
pointed assistant Captain, an
honour in itself.
Gord plays any position except
goal, but would probably give
that a shot if asked to. He played
all:his-minor hockey in Wingham
though heis from the Lucknow
area. While playing for Wingham
Gord was on many trophy win-
ning teams — six championships
while playing PeeWee, was on the
midget team winning the Wing -
ham Midget Tournament, and
runners up three times in . the
same tournament, and runners
up in the Silver Stick Tourna-
ment.
Gord you are a great hockey.
player and we all wish you luck
this season.
