Morrey and Secretary Ed Fielding presided at the annual meeting of the Wingham 'Horticultural Society last Friday evening. Roy Bennett gave one of the committee reports, itemizing plantings in the various plots around. town. Horticultural society holds annual meeting Eighteen people braved the weather to attend the annual meeting of the Wingham Horti- cultural Society last Friday eve- ning. The meeting was held in the town hall and presided over by Mrs. I. E. Morrey, president off the society. In her remarks Mrs. Morrey thanked those present for their attendance and gave a resume of the work of the society in beautifying the town. She also thanked the various committee chairmen for their efforts. The minutes of the previous annual were read by Secretary Ed Fielding and approved. Correspondence was very light, after which Treasurer Gordon Baxter presented the audited financial statement. Income totalled almost $2,00 from carious sources, and expendi- tures amounted to well over $1,300, leaving a balance of some $600 to start next year's work. Committee reports followed with Frank Madill reporting a drop in the number of members for the year; the total is now 190, down 24 from last year. Roy Ben- nett gave a detailed account of the plantings at the various plots around the town. Mr. Bennett itemized the plantings and stated the largest plantings were 350 border begonias and 172.gera- niums The report of the chairman of the show committee, Stewart Beattie, was read by the secre- tary. In this report Mr. Beattie s-ivamarize i the points and win- ners in the various classes at the flower show held in August. The report of the refreshment com- mittee was presentedeby Mrs. Ena Ritchie, covering the dif- ferent shows and other occasions when refreshments were served during the year. 1 _ Mr. Madill then presented the report of the nominating com- mittee: After calling for further nominations from the floor, the report was accepted. This report named the following for the com- ing year: president, Mrs. I..E. Morrey; first vice-president, Mrs. Janet Fielding ; second vice- president, Mrs. Daisy Connell; directors for one-year: Roy Ben- nett, John Donaldson, Mrs. Kathy Forsyth, Mrs. Annabelle Hoy, Jack Walker; directors for two - years: Stewart Beattie, Frank Madill, Hugh Mundell, Mrs. Ena Ritchie, Miss Merle Wilson; auditors, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ellacott. The secretary and treasurer will be appointed by the directors at their first meeting in- ,, the new' year: The annual meeting of -District 8 will be held in Wingham on Saturday, April 22, 1978, and in this connection the following were nominated as the official delegates of the Wingham'. Society: Mrs. Forsyth, Mr, Madill and Mrs. Fielding. This meeting of District 8 is open to all persons interested in horticul-. cure, and attendance is expected to be high as the early fall will see the International Blowing Match being held on the outskirts of Wingham. The southern part of the district is responsible for a floral display in this hpge under- taking, and.the local society will probably be taking the initiative, The evening concluded with the showing of slides by Ross Hamil- ton. The highlight of these slides was the winter scenes of this im- mediate area. A social time fol- lowed with. the serving of refresh- ments by Mrs. Ritchie and her committee. Bowling LEGION LADIES Doris Remington recorded the high single of 260, with Emaline Sturdy's 250 runner-up. The.high triple was Muriel Irvine's 684 and Jean King's 626 was runner-up. Other games over 200 were bowled by Muriel Irvine 248, 237; Jean Renwick 227; Jean King 218, 246; W-innifred Harcourt 216; Shirley Foxton 218, 207. • The Canadians are in first place with 39 points tut close be: hind are the Molsons at 38. Other doubles over 300 were Ethel Day 329; Reta Merkley 312: Anne Geddes 340; Elizabeth Robertson 333. The Cherries are still in first place in the standings, at 29. Se- cond are the Apricots at 28, followed by the Kumquats and Peaches tied at 25. The Raspber= ries have 12 and the Crabapples 11. 0--•0-0 FORDWICH MIXED Marion Behrns, with a 214 single, took top honors in that division last week. Nellie Allan had the high triple of 629. For the guys, it was Don Adair's 271 single and 751 triple.
