Growing bulbs
indoors 'brighten
winter days
Flowering bulbs grown indoors
during the winter can add color
and cheer to your home on dull
winter days.
R. F. Gomme, Ontario Ministry
of Agriculture and Food horti-
culturist, says forcing varieties
of tulips, daffodils, hyacinths,
and narcissus indoors is quite
easy.
"It's only a matter of simulat-
ing the outside growing condi-
tions in a shorter time span."
Bulbs should be planted in pots
containing a soil mixture of equal
parts loam, sand, and peat moss.
Mr. • Gomme recommends
placing small stones or broken
crockery over the hole at the
bottom of the pot to ensure good
drainage.
To plant bulbs, start by half
filling the pot with soil, then
placing the bulbs one-half inch
apart. Add more soil until just the
tips of the bulbs show.
Mr. Gomme cautions against
packing the soil too tightly. Water
the pot throoughly so the soil
settles around the bulbs at a level
about one-half inch below the pot
rim.
Place the pots in a cool, dark
place such as the basement,
garage, or refrigerator, for about
three months. Check occasionally
to see whether bulbs are rooting
and moist.
Mr. Gomme says bulbs can be
brought into warmer tempera-
tures in a shaded location once
roots begin to show in the drain-
age hole and some top growth
begins.
As the shoots green, remove
the plants to a brighter area with
a room temperature of about 18
degrees Celsius and water them
well.
Reactor starts up
without problems
The unit three reactor in the A
generator at the Bruce Nuclear
Power Development was started
up' without problems Monday. An
Ontario Hydro ser okcs,T,an ues-
cribed the start as a "smooth fast
run-up".
The reactor, one of four in
generator A, is three to four
weeks ahead of schedule. When in
full operation sometime next
year it should produce 750 mega-
watts.
Engineers will concentrate on
adjusting the reactor for the next
several weeks and it will then be
used to produce steam to power
the generator turbines.
A fourth reactor is scheduled to
start up in January, 1979. This
will bring the plant's output to
3,000 megawatts. Total value of
the facilities at generator A will
be around $1.4 billion when com-
pleted.
PRECARIOUS PERCH—One hundred and fifty feet in the air Ken Glasser bolts a new
section on a tower being erected by Country Cable Ltd. just outside Wingham. When
completed the tower will rise 310 feet into the sky and should "improve reception for cable
television viewers. Even at less than half its final height the tower already reaches above
the current antennas.
GROUND CREW—Brad McDonald and Gerry Glasser prepare to send another section of
the tower to Ken Glasser high above them. A cable winch raises the 10 foot sections one at
a time to be bolted into place. The finished tower will rise 310 feet into the Turnberry
township air to pull in television stations for viewers on the Country Cable Ltd,. system.
The three take turns going up the tower, Gerry Glasser said. The cold weather slows their
work but doesn't stop them and he expects the tower to be completed by the end of the
week, with some of the antennas up by the middle of next week.
