The guests included reeves Bill Elston of Morris, Roy Williamson of Grey and Calvin Kreuter of Brussels and Huron - Bruce MPP Murray Gaunt. Following his talk, Mr. Prior, accepted the key to the building from Bill Dunker, representing XDG Contractors, the builders, and then passed it en to recrea- tion chairman Wayne Lowe. The centre was dedicated by Rev. Eric DeDrew and, after an ad- dress by area consultant Al Sin- clair of the ministry of culture and recreation, the pipe band led a parade to the platform where the three reeves took part in the ribbon -cutting ceremony. Of the $856,000 cost of the centre, $436,00 came from Win- tario grants and a, further $150,0110 from the ministry of cul- ture and recreation. The ministry also funded a $28,000 elevator to enable handicapped persons to use the facility. The community was responsible for raising $235,000 toward the centre and all but about $12,000 has already been collected. The community centre has three main sections: an arena, an auditorium and a meeting room. The arena has an ice surface 85 by 185 feet and seats 400. The auditorium has a capacity of about 500 and contains a kitchen, cloakroom and portable stage. The upstairs meeting room is licenced for 108 persons and is available for gatherings of dubs and organizations or for. banquets. The committee included a heat pump in the building's design which should save 30-40 per cent on the heating bills, Mr. Prior said. The pump should also help cool and dehumidify the centre in the summer, he added. He said the committee spent six months touring the area to gather ideas on the community centre and then combined the best ones into its own design. The committee started looking into the possibilities for building a new arena in 1976 when it be- came clear the old Brussels arena would be condemned. The old arena was ordered closed or repaired in July of that year and the first sod was turned for the new structure last April. Money for the new centre was, raised through donations and by a walk-a-thon. It is bat on land donated by Jack Bryans for one dollar.
