On-site meting set
for municipal drain
Landowners on the Johnson
municipal drain will be meeting
with East Wawanosh Township
engineer E. W. Shiflett tomor-
row, Nov. 10, to discuss outlet
problems on the drain., The
meeting will be held at 1 p.m. at
the intersection of Highway 4
with East Wawanosh Concession
4-5.
The township council fixed the
date for the field meeting during
its regular monthly meeting last
week, after hearing in a letter
from Mr. Shiflett that problems
with the drain definitely exist and
should be investigated.
He said that although some
landowners in Morris Township
feel the drain is working ade-
quately, there are definite prob-
lems with outlet. There is insuf-
ficient cover on the lower reaches
of the drain and at the time he
checked it the outlet was under
water.
Problems with the Johnson
drain, which runs from East
Wawanosh through Morris Town-
ship, were brought to council's
attention two months ago when
Karl Whitfieldapproached' coun-
cil to inquire about a petition for
work on the drain. He returned
last month with the completed
petition and the engineer was
asked to prepare a report.
Mr. Whitfield complained he is
unable to use part of his farm
because of water lying on the
land. Lower portions of the drain
may be working, he said, but it
isn't working for him. Sixty acres
of his farm assessed into the
Johnson drain.
Last week Councillor Ralph
Campbell confirmed Mr. Whit-
field has a serious problem. All of
his land assessed into that drain
is lying under water, Mr.
Campbell said, declaring: ,'1t is
an overloaded drain, no doubt
about it,."
Owners of the majority of the
land assessed into the drain must
give approval in order to have
major work carried out on it. Mr.
Shiflett said an earlier report on
that drain had been prepared in
1961, but no work was ever done.
BRIDGE REPAIR
In another report, council
learned repairs are necessary to
the 10th Line bridge on Conces-
sion 10-11. All bridges in the
township were checked by an
engineer from B. M. Ross and
Associates\ Goderich, who re-
ported no critical deficiencies but
recommended maintenance on
that structure.
Cost of the repairs is estimated
at $12,000, with the township
responsible for $2A00 of the total.
All other bridges passed inspec-
tion with flying colors.
East Wawanosh approved
building permits ti' . «'h for:
Jose Homan, shed;
Robert Campbe: a xi to
dwelling; Murray Scott, addition
to barn and bunker silo; Hank
Kikkert, dwelling; and Bill
Empey, dwelling. Mr. Scott's
permit is subject to the approval
of the Ministry of the Environ-
ment, Mr. Kikkert's is subject to
the approval of the county health
unit and Mr. Empey's must be
approved by the health unit and
roads department.
Council also approved ,a sev-
erance for Eldon Cook on Con-
cession 5. Six acres are to be
severed, but the land is intended
to remain in agricultural use.
In other business, Road Super-
intendent Clarence Hanna was
instructed to advertise for a
snowplow operator. Council
heard that the new truck it has
purchased to use for snowplowing
is almost ready for delivery.
When the baby is between six
and nine months old his back leg
muscles grow sufficiently strong
for him to attempt sitting up and
crawling, according to St. John
Ambulance. His jaw has also
been developing and his teeth be-
gin to come through. The two
centre teeth on the lower jaw are
usually the first to appear.
