Bow to Stayner in
preseason hocke
Hot goaltending • led Stayner
Siskins to a 4-2 win over the Wing -
ham Ironmen in a closely fought
game at Wingham arena last
Sunday night. A large crowd
turned out to watch. the Junior D
exhibition action. '
An outstanding effort ' by
Siskins' Brian De Geer held off
Wingham's shooting power time
-after time, while Brian Wall
played well between the pipes for
the Ironmen but allowed three
first period goals.
The second period was clearly
Wingham's, with the . only goal
scored by defenceman Mike
Montgomery from Paul Inglis
and Dale Whitfield.
The teams exchanged goals in
the third period. Wingham struck
first on a powerplay, with Ron
Riley scoring from Whitfield.
Stayner came back'at 17:46 to put
the game out of reach with a final
goal. '
WHISTLE STOPS: The crowd
enjoyed clean, fast, hard-hitting
hockey in the game against
Stayner Siskins and left the arena
talking about a good-looking
Ironmen team.
Bernie Haines was picked as
one of the stars and Rookie rear-
guard Mike Montgomery also
op
looked exceptionally good. The
forward line of MacLaurin,
Kinahan and Kieffer came back
to the bench with the players
shaking their heads and wonder-
ing what they had to do to score.
All in all, Coach Skinn was very
happy with the play of the'whole
team and appears very excited as
the 1977-78 season approaches.
It was nice to see a large
crowd, which seemingly enjoyed
this exciting brand of hockey. It
is hoped the good crowds' will
continue throughout the season.
Bridge results
Four and a half tables played at
Wingham Duplicate Bridge Club
last Thursday. •
Yvonne McPherson and May
Porter came first and Wilf
French and Omar Haselgrove
tied with Harley Crawford and
Kay Forgie for second and third
place.
In 1940,' it was reported that
only three Dene families lived all
year round at Arctic Red -River
located 1100 'miles northwest of
Edmonton. Today the community
is populated by over 135.
