Orton Grain of 855 Main St. E., Listowel, died Oct. 4 in Uni- versity Hospital in London. He was 61. Mr. Grain was born in East Wawanosh Twp. on Nov. 17, 1915, ,the son of the late Lancelot Grain and the former Victoria Lula Currie. On Sept. 19, 1942, he mar- ried the former Margaret Louise Proctor in Wingham. Mr. Grain lived in Wingham until moving to Listowel in the 1940's, Mr. Grain operated a taxi busi- ness in Listowel for 10 years before joining Lou's Transport. He was a member of Christ Anglican Church, and Listowel Legion Branch 259. He is survived lay his wife; son Gary of Listowel; daughter Pat- ricia of Toronto; and two grand- children. A memorial service was held at Christ Anglican Church, Listowel on Friday, Oct. 7, with Rev. Douglas Fuller officiating. The body was cremated. The soloist at the .service was Les Hurst of Listowel. In charge of arrangements was the Robert Trench Funeral Home, Listowel. Aft. unit neeti.n 9 The afternoon unit of the United Church Women met in the fellowship room on October 4, the ladies being welcomed by Mrs. Edighoffer and Mrs. E. Stewart. Miss Ann Henry opened the meeting with prayer, followed' by the singing ofa hymn. Miss Ann Wilson read a meditation , on Thanksgiving entitled "Count Your Blessings". ' The offering was received and dedicated ,and another. Thanksgiving hymn was sung. • Mrs. George Underwood pre- sided for the business. Roll call was answered by 27 members and the minutes were read and approved. Mrs. Bone gave the treasurer's report. Arrangements were made for helpers and for donations of food for the regional rally on October 12, the church anniversary October 30 and the turkey supper on November 2. Anyone who can help With a quilting is. asked to contact Mrs. Underwood or Mrs. Boss. The ladies were reminded that the Friendship Club willbe held a week later than usual this month, on October,26, when Ross Hamilton will speak and show slides. The national anthem was sung and the meeting closed with prayer by Mrs. Underwood and all repeating the Mispah bene- diction. A social half hour followed. Thanksgivin is theme for Gorrie UCW Intended for last week GORRIE — Mrs. Wes Ball Jr. had charge of the program, with ,the theme "Thanksgiving", when the United Church Women held their September meeting The Sunday School room was decorated with the bountiful fruits of the harvest. Mrs. Russell Powell, Mrs. Gerald Galbraith and Mrs. Glad Edgar assisted with readings on thankfulness. Mrs, Robert Strong was accompanist for the singing of the hymns and Mrs.' Wilbur Hogg played a piano solo. Mrs. Lorne Mann presided for the business. Plans were made for the church annual bazaar on November 5 from 1:30 until 4:30. An invitation was received to attend the Molesworth WMS Thankoffering service on October 12 at two o'clock. The North Re- gional rally will be held that eve- ning at seven o'clock in the Wing- ham United Church. The work- shop theme is "God Calls; We Offer Ourselves". On Saturday, October 15, The Fifth Addition Unit will hold a sale of children's good used cloth- ing. The sale will be held from one until four and the articles will be sold on commission. Rev. Michael Boulger, Monk - ton, will be the anniversary pest speaker on October 16. If'e Is a former missionary to the Indians. The. Mari -Belle Singers of the Belmore area, under the direc- tion of Mrs. Carl Douglas, will also be in attendance. Donations of good used clothing may be left in the church on Octo- ber 17 and 18 and will be packed October 19 for missions. On Monday, October 24, the ladies plan to entertain the residents of the Fordwich Village Nursing Home. A turkey supper will be held in the church on November 15. The president also announced the formation of a church men's group in Gorrie. Senior Citizens entertain guests FORDWICH - The Senior Citizens entertained 40 members of the Wingham group at their October meeting. The president, Wray Cooper welcomed the visitors, Mrs. S. Bride was elected secretary for the remainder of the year as Mrs.. C. Sotheran had met with a serious accident. Mrs. "Florence Wilson was con- vener of the program committee and presented the "Pearly Gates Quartet", Mr. and 'Mrs. Metzger of Harriston and' Mr. and Mrs. Elem Martin of Dorking, who harmonized, . unaccompanied in singing some beautiful hymns. Miss Minnie McElwain and Mrs. Eva Harris conducted a humorous skit, "The Census Taker"., Don 'Coghlin, Lorne Lambkin and daughter Lisa gave some toe - tapping melodies and songs on organ, guitar and electric guitar. Mrs. Wilson gave a reading on "The left side of the bed". Mr. and Mrs. Gren Parkinson of Toronto spent the weekend with Henry Mundt and with the latter's mother, Mrs. Ruby Fos- ter in Listowel Memorial Hospi- tal. Mrs. Doug Bunker and Mrs. Jack Douglas entertained at the former's home Sunday afternoon for a miscellaneous shower in honor of Miss Angie Hones who will be a bride in November. Several contests were enjoyed during the afternoon after which the bride-to-be was presented with her gifts. Lunch was served by the hostesses, assisted by Chris and Allison Bunker and Barbara Thornton. Friends of Mrs. Marjorie Sotheran will be pleased to know that her condition is as well as can be expected. She underwent major surgery this past week in University Hospital, London. Mrs. Sotheran was Beverly in- jured in a car -pedestrian acci- dent on Sunday, October 2. Drainage the main topic for W. Wawanosh council Trustees from Auburn attended the October meeting of West Wawanosh township council to discuss the dog control bylaw, passed at the previous council meeting, and also the question of new street lights. Regarding the bylaw, which has been passed by the councils of West Wawanosh and Hullett townships , to control dogs ' in Auburn, the clerk was directed to advertise in the Blyth and Goder- ich papers, 'notifying thew police village residents about the bylaw. The trustees will look after ob- taining the services of a control officer. The clerk was also write Ontario. Hydro application is being made to the Ontario Municipal Board for authorization to sell debentures onbehalf of the police village to cover the cost of installing new lights. Council authorized the clean out of the Dungannon Drain and requested Arnold Stothe'ts to undertake the work with his backhoe. In response to a request by Roy Robson, who asked to. have some extra work done to the Kirk Drain because of the new insuffi- cient outlet for the Sproul Drain,. the clerk was directed to contact Engineer Doug Gamsby about having !' le Kirk Drain extended to a sufficient outlet, if possible. A court of revision on the Srpyth Municipal Drain Exten- sion and Improvement assess- ments will be held Nov. 8. Engineer Henry Uderstadt's report on his visit to the Anderson Drainage Works on H. Londry's property was read to council. Council agreed the Londrys will be consulted before any further action is taken. Third reading and final- pas- sage was given to a bylaw ap- pointing Harold Errington to the. position of drainage superinten- dent for the township: In other business, Reeve Robert Lyons reported to council regarding a plea from Mrs. David Sproul about( reorganizing the method of street light assess-, ment in 'Dungannon. The clerk will look into other methods of charging the annual rate for the lights. Council also decided .to donate $150 to the Farmstead and Home I t 'rovement competition being ld in conjunction with -next year's International Plowing Match. Road accounts of $3,055 and general accounts of $1,979.77 were passed for payment.
