Annual arthritis canvass
is slated for next Monday
The Wingham Kinettes are
making final arrangements for
their annual canvass of Wingham
and Bluevale on behalf of the
Canadian Arthritis and Rheuma-
tism Society. It is slated for next
Monday, September 26.
Many of the dedicated volun-
teers who give their time and
enthusiasm to help with the cam-
paign are themselves suffering
from one of the many dozens of
types of arthritis or rheumatism.
They know what it is to drop a
plate, negotiate stairs slowly or
have to ask someone else to do
the • simple jobs which .they did
with ease a few months or years
ago. .
Because . many of CARS'
workers are volunteer, much of
the money raised during its can-
vasses goes toward research into
the many different kinds of arth-
ritis. Especially difficult to treat
is the crippler', rheumatoid
arthritis. It rarely kills but can
slowly disable:
Rheumatoid arthritis has been
an intensely frustrating disease
to study, the arthritis society
says, partly because at intervals
the disease may drastically
worsen and Later spontaneously
and spectacularly improve. Be-
cause of this intermittence and
unpredictability, effectiveness of
treatment can be • difficult to
assess.
Finally, the study of .rh'euma-
toid arthritis is made difficult be-
cause this disorder occurs spon-
taneously only in man and not in
laboratory animals.

The symptoms of rheumatoid
arthritis usually appear between
the ages of 20 and 50. The early
symptoms are all-over tiredness,
the feeling of being sore, stiff and
aching. Then come pain, swell-
ing, warmth and tenderness in
one or more joints, particularly
those of the hands and feet.
Disability can now be pre-
vented in four out of five patients
but the key is prompt diagnosis
and treatment. Great progress
has been made in the past few
years. Surgery, is now able to re-
place some joints and free many
arthritis sufferers from pain and
helplessness. For these people it
means a new lease on life.
This work is continued through
the generosity of people who give
to the Canadian Arthritis. and
Rheumatism Society. The
Kinettes request the support of
area residents to put this year's
campaign "over the top".
Anyone who can help in any way
with the canvass is asked to
contact Mrs. Shirley Hanula at
357-2405.
