THE KICKING GAME
by Zenon Andrusyshyn
TORONTO ARGONAUTS
D. Coaching Principles:
'After describing both
styles of place kicking, it
was •indicated that the
manner in which the foot
contacted the ball was
crucial for both accuracy
and obtainable distance.
The alignment of the body
during kicking phase, had
drastic consequences on
performance. Consistent
kicking action and a
consistent body align-
ment is what the coach
should strive for, in ,his
kickers.
There would be two types
of practise sessions for
kickers. •
The kicker should he
rushed while kicking
from various distances,
and a record should be
kept.,_ of distance, ac-
curacy, and rotation of
ball. .. •
•
Both styles of field -goal
kicking, straight -on arid
soccer -style, have their
advantages. As a kicker
that has used both'styles
during my career,- I
would' encourage
whatever style is . most
comfortable and provides
the most accuracy: '
Remember, also, that
consistent practice with
one's holder and center
will give the self-
confidenee needed to kick
an accurate, crucial,
field -goal.
E. Miscellaneous
Aspects: These are
aspects to the kicking
game, not mentioned in
any of the articles 1 have
written.: Preseason
training 'is a must. My
initial training begins
with weights and indoor
sports, such .as basket-
ball, squash, tennis and
handball Around May,
when your wind ihas been
built-up, begin a serious
outdoor program of
running and kicking.
Start kicking slowly and
do not attempt any long
kicks for 2 to 3 weeks. A
good pre -season workout
schedule could include
weight -lifting r cleans,
bench -press, press),
calisthenics, jogging for 1
mile, .6-10 sprints of 50
•yards each, 30-60 minutes
of form kicking at •least 3
times.a week.
During the season, your
kicking should be near
perfect.
Don't\ ign,tfre funda-
mentals: Kick field -goals
from every distance, but
don't kick more than 25
per day. The same holds
true for punts. Try'to kick
.at least 6 kicks with 'a,
rush', per day, and con-
tinue running sprints
rather than long jogging.
Finally, remember, it
takes time and discipline
to be consistantly good at
field -goal kicking ' and
punting!! -
The best to you, • and
GOOD KICKING!!
