he Barn-
, The odor was just right, the set-
ting decidedly a barn and the act -
;10g excellent in Theatre Passe
uraille's production of "He
Won't Come In From the Barn",
at the Blyth Memorial Hall open-
ing night, Aug. 25.
Ted Johns gave a capital per-.
. formance as Elmer Clark, a
farmer (living on the 7th con-
• cession of Morris) who decides to
stay in his barn as a protest over
government regulations, (bulk
coolers). Two cattle beasts and a
few grunting pigs certainly added
.to the atmosphere on stage.
Elmer is a slow, but sometimes
witty man ("feed costs more than
the pigs") who's facial expres-
sions are priceless to watch. A
slight grin starts on his face and
you know he is about to say some-
thing he believes is very funny,
but often only exasperates those
around him.
His young, modern son, played
by David Fox, tells his father he
might as well stay in the barn, he
spends, so much time there al-
ready. His father follows through
and remains in the barn long past
the time he really would like to
come out.
But he has become a hero to
other farmers in the area who be-
lieve he has stayed in sole protest
over new farm regulations. His
wife (played by Clare Coulter)
takes a trip to Ireland and back
and his son marries and fathers a
child during his stay in the barn.
Newspapers write stories about
im. (Front page "Banner"
story) and radio and television
crews talk to his wife, who really
seems to enjoy the attention.
Even Barbara Frum calla her.
She certainly doesn't persuade
Elmer to return to the house. She
.takes his meals to him and tells
him she isn't lonely.
A veterinarian gives Elmer 90.
days notice to fix up his barn or.
else. Elmer keeps his pigs and
cattle together which is wrong
and he hasn't switched to bulk
coolers yet. In fact, as he says, "I
keep my milking machines' in. my
pockets when they are '. not
needed."
More humor is added when
Elmer comments on the young
vet's bright yellow hard hat and
the .trouble he has While. inspect .. 'a
ing the cattle. As the. vet prepares
to gran internal examination to
a cow, Elmer quips, "Another
free government service."
At one point, a young, pretty
blonde moves in with Elmer be-
cause she thinks it's a neat way to
protest against her 'mean'
parents. She tells Elmer the older
generation doesn't know how to
have fun.
She almost persuades him to
join in.on a gravel run, (hey, you.
could buy the' booze) but he in
turn convinces her that she will
miss out on all the fun if she stays
in the barn.
The old local doctor visits
Elmer . one day to give him a
check-up. Elmer is' almost dis-
appointed when the doctor an-
nounces he is as healthy as an ox.
(It's the doctor's first house call

Elan really knows how to
handle itself. And in the deep-
est snow, it runs rings around
the challengers. It's all in the
wayit's built. Not much weight,

That's one of the reasons Elan

The doctor's methods leave
something to be desired. He
washes his hands in the water the
milk -is cooling in and drys them'
on a cow. He comments he can
use the tongue depressor again
and uses Elmer's watch to time
his pulse.
People are now speculating
Elmer is a little crazy. A nephew
and his wife try to persuade
Elmer to come out of the barn. be-
cause he is giving the Clark name
a bad reputation.
They say Elmer can sell the
farm for $150,000 because of the
publicity. Elsner is almost in-
