The practice of TM is not neat%,
It has been practised in eastern
cultures for years. The Maharishi'
felt it was time to offer TM : tp
everyone, say John and Rich, be-
cause TM offers a rest from
today's fast -paced world.
The Maharishi began teaching
the practice himself, but was
unable to reach everyone who
wanted to learn, say the brothers,
so he taught certain people
teach for him.
SOURCE OF THOUGHT

says John. "It allows us: to be
more familiar with the depth: °f-

Something so simple for su
serious problems sounds perhap
a little too good, but the brother
say they have never heard an
negative comments about TM
that everyone who practises i
develops his or her full potentia
as a human being.
A social worker from Goder
ich's Blue Water Centre,. how
ever, does disagree with the
practice of TM, saying he has
seen it destroy some people. A
Wingham medical doctor says it
doesn't serve any- definite pur-
pose and a new student of TM
says it isn't- as great as the
teachers said it would be. A local
minister and a psychiatrist also
had negative comments about
TM.
WHAT IS TM?
According to the teaching of
,John and Rich, during TM the
body and mind reach a state of
restful alertness. It is similar to
the deep sleep during normal
sleep, but • in TM the mind
remains alert.
Daily stress and accumulated
stress are relieved when the body'
is completely relaxed. The deep
sleep obtained during TM is in-
dicated by the reduction of
oxygen use, as seen in normal
sleep. There is an eight per cent
reduction of oxygen use during
normal sleep, the brothers say,
and a 16 –per cent reduction
during TM, which 'makes TM
sleep much deeper than normal.
John. and Rich say this is a
state of pure happiness; with

i Yet statistics are not the only or

the effectiveness of anything.
- They certainly should be looked
at, but opinions from• people•are
beneficial also.
SOCIAL WORKER
It didn't take long to find' some
negative viewpoints on TM. The
first came from a social worker
who took the TM course. George
Onwubere of Goderich's Blue
Water Centre has been a social
worker for it years.
"It requires a great deal of
emotional strength, it -takes a lot
out of you," he claims. Mr. On-
wubere says he took the course as
a matter of interest and stresses
youlnust have the personality to
handle TM. Emotional and extra -
sensitive people are the types he
would advise to steer clear of TM.
"I'm scared of it even when I
know it,"he says. "It can be.
absorbing — mentally and physi-
s catty." He uses the TM technique
on very„rare occasions with fami-
lies he is working with — "as a
last. resort.”
"Read the books," he said, "it
should be enough. The more you
get into it, the deeper you fall in.
When people expose themselves
to themselves, it is threatening. I
have seen people destroyed by
TM."
In an extreme example, Mr.
Onwubere said he knows a person
who spent. two years in a psy-
chiatrist hospital after an involv-
ment in TM. It could trigger
something • more serious to ex
plods. • t

.. Rev. Barry Passmore of the
Wingham United Church ,agrees
that the organization is "making
good". "People have lest confi-

isn't filled and man will turn ° to
anything to fill' that void," he
says.
A new student of TM• says it
isn't as great as the teachers said
it would be. This person wishes to
remain anonymous, contrary to
the fact that- John said most
students don't mind their names
being repeated since they
always get good results from
TM. "I've paid my money,
though, so I will see it through,"
the student says.

Rev Ron Baker of the Wing -

very animated about the
topic of TM as he had studied it in
college.

"TM is really Hinduism
dressed up in Western ter-
minology to appeal to the society
of the 20th century. To fully
understand TM, one must have a
thorough background in Hindu
sm and philosophy. '
"Maharishi Mahesh Yogi is a
Hindu. He is deeply studied in the
hilosophy of that religion and
oyal to its gods. The guru freely
dmits to that and holds this
ackground of TM to be its• great
otivating power.
"Hinduism may be compared
o a tree, yoga to a branch ;and
M to the fruit• of that branch.
This simple analogy illustrates
he deep -rooted, -ties -that Til 'has -

"The technique of TM may be
'helpful' but the method draws
you into the area of Hinduism.
This led to the disintegration of a
whole system ... India, in a quest
to' reach the Godhead. In India
the cow is revered to the exclu-
sion of a dying starving child.
-"The person who says TM is
different than Hinduism has no
concept of Hinduism and does not
understand TM at all. TM
teachers may have favorable
results with the methodology and
technique but the gospel of our
Lord Jesus Christ is far superior
statistically: Jesus Christ has
been transforming the souls of
millions for nearly 2,000 years.
"Teen Challenge, the most
successful drug rehabilitation
centre in the world, with its ex-
tensive involvment with d>ug
eddlcts,-alcoholics, broken mar-
riages, homosexuals etcetera, at-
tributes its success to the .fact
that its major concentration is on
the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Some
80, per cent of those entering into
their centres come out totally and
completely delivered," Pastor
Baker said. '
Dr. Michael Conlon, psy-
hiatrist for Huron County, says,
