Maxine Crook will return to television next, season and Harry Brown will return to regular announcing duties with CBC Radio. _ Don Harron, an accomplished actor, writer, comedian and broadcaster, made his debut on the CBC in 1936 as a child per- former in a thrice weekly radio adventure series. In the late forties 4e performed in Andrew • Allan's radio drama series and on stage with Toronto's New Play Society.,He also starred with the original cast of the Spring Thaw comedy revue. In the early 50's Harron went to England to create a comedy series for the BBC. While in Eng- land he worked as a writer on the series "Bedtime with Braden". Peirforming in the stage version of "A Streetcar Named neaire" and "The Seventh Veil" he was spotted by playwright Chris- topher Fry for the New York opening of "A Sleep of Prisoners". After a successful run in New York and a six-month tour, Harron returned to Toronto to co- star with Lorne Greene and Honor Blackman in Sartre's "Crime of , Passion". He co- starred with Janet Mallet and Norman Jewison in "Spring Thaw" where he introdflced his' now famous character Charlie Farquharson. Harron moved into television virtually on opening night. In fact during the first season of Cana- The Wingham Advance -Times, August 17, 1977 dian television, Harron did al- most every job available: he starred in a 90 -minute drama once a month; hosted a 60 -minute variety show once a month;. wrote 13 episodes of a 26 -week series of Stephen Leacock's "Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town" and appeared in an his- torical serial as General Wolfe. At the same time he starred in the first season at Stratford, playing the lead opposite Irene Worth in "All's Well That Ends Well", supported by Sir Alec Guinness. After performing at the Bristol Old Vic in England, two more seasons at Stratford, and another New •York run, . Harron settled down with a children's novel he had been reading to his kids and turned it into a 90 -minute tele- vision musical entited "Anne of Green Gables". Music was by ' double Emmy winner Norman Cainpbell and the stage version at the Charlottetown Festival has had a long run and attracted wide acclaim in both Canada and abroad. Herron's eclectic career du?ing the 1950's and 1960's included per- formances on Broadway; ap- pearances in most of the major dramatic series in American television; stage, radio and tele- vision performances in Canada; and radio hosting stints with the CBC. His success with the Charlie Farquharson characterization is well documented. To date the Farquharson character has appeared on ABC television's "Hee Haw", in comic editorials on radio, in Global Television is "Shhh ! It's the News" not to mention several books with com- bined `sales of more than 200,000 copies. Harron has also taken his Farquharson characterization on performing and debating engage- ments across Canada. Harron' has most recently been see on the CBC Television Su*pecial "Let's Save Canada With Comedy" with Yvon Deschamps and the one-hour tribute to Tyrone Guthrie, "The Unselfish Giant of Stratford" which he wrote and narrated for CBC Television. Once typed by Walter Kerr as one of the three best young actors in North America and introduced to Hollywood by Katherine Hep- burn, Harron made a decision 10 years aPn that he would stay in Canada and commit his talents to this country. This fall, as host of CBC Radio's Morningside, he will guide listeners on a unique daily on -air tour of the country with the ` unbridled wit and wisdom that has made him , known to Canadians from coast to coast.
