EARTHLY POSSESSIONS by
Anne Tyler
The novel opens moments be-
fore it happens. "The marriage
wasn't going well," says• Char-
lotte Emory, "and I decided to
leave my husband.I went to the
bank to get cash for the trip."
Suddenly, amazingly, she is leav-
ing, hustled out of the Maryland
Safety Savings Bank by a total
stranger, a strange young man in
a slithery black nylon jacket.
This is the story of .a woman who
unexpectedly makes the journey
she has been preparing for all her
life:
THE CHRONICLES OF ADRIAN
by. Emily Childs
It is the sweet, soft summer of
1873. The Hampton family, ac-
companied by their ”servants,
leave London and travel to their
country home, Brackford, deep in
the Sussex Downs. The journal of
the elder son, Adrian, records the
bustle of settling -in at the stately
old house. Wrapped in the
security of privilege .and close
family ties, the invalid youth
draws a picture of sunlit, upper-
class Victorian leisure.
Emily Childs has written a
story rich in detail and incident,
the compelling chronicle of a
powerful family crushed by its
own perversity.
