What's new at
Huronview?
Several residents enjoyed the
parade and centennial celebra-
tions at Blyth in the weekend. The
former members of the Blyth
United Church attended the Sun-
day morning service and were
guests at the congregational
dinner. Many thanks to those who
made the arrangements and pro-
vided the transportation.
Members of the congregation
of the Clinton Christian Reform-
ed Church formed a choir for the
song service on Sunday evening
led by Dick'"Roorda and accom-
panied by Mrs. Elsie Henderson.
Mrs. Marie Flynn arranged the
musical program for 'Family
Night and played the piano ac-
companiment. Harold Black of
Clinton played guitar, his son
Gary played the accordion and
Lorne Lawson mouth organ.
There were step dance numbers
by Laurie Bell, Debbie and Dawn
Flynn. Piano solos by Jane Bell
and vocal solos by Debbie Flynn.
Joe Flynn, grandfather of the
dancers, thanked the entertain-
ers on behalf of the residents.
The over -90 Club welcomed two
new members at their August
meeting, Mrs. Gertie Bell. and
Hugh Love. The Huronview orch-
estra provided the music for the
program and led the sing -a -long.
The. Waikerburn .Club assisted
with activities.
Bride-to-be
guest at shower
WHITECHURCH — Miss
Marilyn Davidson, bride-to-be,
was honored Sunday afternoon
when a shower was held in the
Community Memorial Hall, host-
ed by Mrs. Harold Davidson, her
daughters and other cousins. She
received many useful gifts, in-
cluding electrical appliances,
linens and kitchenware.
While the women were enjoy-
ing the shower, the men partici-
pated in a game of baseball. They
then returned to the hall where
all .enjoyed a meal.
Marilyn thanked everyone
attending the shower for their
gifts and kindness in honoring her
at this special time in her life.

ARMY STYLE—It's lunch army style for Defence Minister
Barney Danson during a recent visit to the exercise area of
CFB Gagetown, N.B., where he joins (left to right WO Larry
Brown, of Peticodiac, N.B., MCpI Terry Squires, of Mont-
real, and WO Mike Alcock of Oromocto, N.B. Mr. Danson
has visited more than two dozen army, navy and air force
bases, stations and units since taking over the defence port-
folio last November. He recently announced an additional
4,700 men,and women will be added to the Canadian Fbrces
strength raising the ceiling to 83,000 the first increase since

August 1930
W. A. Collins. of Petrolia has`
been engaged by the high school
board to fill the vacancy caused
by the resignation of F. S. Phil-
lips. Besides teaching mathema-
tics and science, Mr. Collins will
have charge . of, the cadets and
physical instruction.
The new Lyceum Theatre
opens next week with 100 per cent
talking pictures. The first attrac-
tion will be the musical comedy,
"Sally", starring Marilyn Miller.
Admission fee for adults is 35
cents; for children, 20 cents. •
Some concern and anxiety is
held as to the whereabouts of an
English farm hand, William Sap-
perton, 17 years of age, who dis-
appeared from the farm home of
William Speirs, Concession 4,'
Morrk: Township, and has not
been heard from for a few weeks.
Some of the boy's clothes "were
found. in a field near the Speirs'
farm, and upon investigation the
police have found the boy got a
"ride with a mail courier as far as
Walton.. However, no further
trace of, him could be found.
The new administration of
Prime Minister Honorable Rich-
ard'B. Bennett of Ontario was "or-
ganized with the Honor ble Rob-
ert Weir of Melford, Saskatchew-
an, named minister of agricul-
ture. Mr. Weir is a Huron County
boy. He was born near Wingham
and attended school on the ninth
concession of Turnberry. He is a
brother of Miss Weir of Victoria
Street.
The following students of Mrs.
G. C. Hanna attained a creditable
standing in their respective
grades in piano at the midsum-
mer examinations of the Toronto
Conservatory of Music: Rita
Hastie, Mary E. Dow,, Marian P.
Robertson, . Thora C. Davison,
Elizabeth J. Weir, Gracey King
and Catherine. Nortrop,
Mrs. M. Ross of Corrie enter-
tained at a delightful trousseau
tea in honor of her daughter, M.
Mable Ross.
Miss Winnifred Farrier of
Whitechurch has resigned from
her school at Cedar Valley and
has taken a position as assistant
teacher in Ripley High School,

The annual picnic of Hackett's
United Church Sunday School
was held at Kintail Beach. Win-
ners of the races were Kenneth
and Mary Lou Alton, Albert
Deeves, Frank Alton, Arnold Al-
ton, Florence MacPherson, Mr.
Mrs. Jerry Downs.
Mrs. Victor Emerson has been
secured as teacher in SS No. 9,
Kinloss for the next school Year.
At a, meeting of the Wingham
General Hospital Board it was
decided to carry on the training
of ward aides. This training,
while it does not entitle those tak-
ing the work the standing of • a
nurse, does give the girls of this
district a type of training that will
be most useful to them and which
has not been available here be-
fore. Girls taking up this work
will have the standing of a practi-
cal nurse or may be recom-
mended for duty as ward aides in
some of the larger hospitals
which are now' using those who
have this class of training.
Kenneth Jackson, who has been
in the office of the Canadian
Acme Screw and Gear Co. of To-
ronto for the past year, left for
Hamilton where he will take
•training in radio in the RCAF.
Kenneth is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. R. E.. Jackson of town.
. The good old days must not be
forgotten. Mel Bradburn of the
sixth line of East Wawanosh, with
a broken leg, a pair of crutches to
hobble about and 50 acres of .
sheaves lying exposed to the wea-
ther, was pleasantly surprised
when 52 men, armed with pitch-
forks, spread hither and thither
and finished the stooking.
Miss Ann Pletch left to take .up
her» duties in the Women's Divi-
sion of the Active.Army. Ann will
be in attendance in a course at
Ottawa for awhile before being
posted for duty.

Church, Rev. Kenneth MacLe
and Rev. John Pollock conducted
a dedicatory service of a window
placed in the church in memory
of the late Mrs. G. H. MacDonald,
wife of Rev. MacDonald, minis-
ter of the church.

August 1953
A new Wingham District High
School was a step closer this
week, with the approval of the
new school by the council of the
township of East Wawanosh. A
total of four municipal councils
have now approved the scheme,
including the towns of Wingham
and the townships of Turnberry
and Kinloss. "
Stock Car No. 15, driven. by
Floyd Jenkins of Wingham, is
making quite a name for itself at
the stock car races in Port Elgin.
In the past week it has won three
firsts, one second and one fourth.
in the big feature Floyd placed
third among 25 entries.
Tender for the new boiler room
and laundry at the- Wingham
General Hospital was let to Dun-
can McDougall, Wingham con-
tractor. Plans call for a 24 -foot by
48 -foot two-storey building with a
100 -ton coal bunker and 70 -foot
smokestack, to be built 30 feet
from the main hospital building.
Douglas Gibson, 16 -year-old
son of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Gib-
son, has been chosen as one of the
top ten rifle shots at Camp Ipper-
wash, where he is training with
1,500 other high school cadets
from all over the province. He is
scheduled to leave Ipperwash on
Friday for Ottawa where he will
compete in the Dominion ..•of -Gan-
ada Rifle Association competi-
tion there, against a team of
cadets from England.
The annual frolic, for which
Howick Lions Club and Howick
Legion joined forces, was a gala
event for the whole countryside.
An amateur contest was won by
Lorraine Halliday, Mount Forest,
an acrobatic dancer. Second
prize went to Sharon Grubb,
Blue ale, dancing the sword
dance; third to Marlene Feigel,
Gorrie, and Bill Giles, Gowans -
town, a vocal duet.
Building permits,to the value of
$15,000 were passed at the town
council meeting. Among them
were permits for a dwelling for
Nelson Cunningham on Cornyn
Street and a grain silo for John
Bumstead and Son at the CNR
railway.

Tim R. Willis, vocational
school auto mechanics teacher at
the Wingham District High
School, was among the 60 teach-
ers from 36 Ontario centres to at-
tend a dinner in Oshawa as guests
of General Motors of Canada. The
dinner marked the conclusion of
the first of a series of courses
which has placed GM in the field
of secondary school training
under departments of education
across Canada.
Eleanor Ann Walsh and Dun-
can Ross Campbell exchanged'
marriage vows at a ceremony
solemnized in• the Knox United
Church, Belgrave, The young
couple will reside near .Kincar-
dine.
Miss Janet Beecroft of White-
church was a counsellor last
week at the Goderich Summer
School, for girls from nine to 13
years of age.
