'sa ,r Pisge 8 -The Wingham Advance -Times, June 29, 1977 Drought in May causes problems Cool' temperatures, cloudy weather and rain have relieved the drought conditions in Southern and Central Ontario, according to Dr. Murray Brown, agrometeorologist at the Ontario Agricultural College. In the early days of June about one inch of rain fell in Southern and Central Ontario bringing the soil moisture back to normal after very dry May conditions. Dr. Brown says that with a re- turn to warmer temperatures farmers will need more rain to ensure continued good growth of hay pasture and spring grains. Although extended dry periods are not uncornmon in Southern Ontario during May, this May was one of the driest on record. Statistics taken at Guelph show only 1.31 inches (33mm) of rain fell in May, which is less than half the normal amount for that month. "We have to go back to 1962 to find a drier May," says Dr. Brown. Looking at the number of days between rains, temperatures and sunshine hours give a better indi- cation of the drought conditions in many parts of the province during May 1977. "There was barely any mea- surable rain at Guelph between April 24 and May 16 (23 days). We have to go back to 1971 to find a comparable period of 22 days." Although there have been years with comparable dry periods, temperatures were not as high or as extreme as in May 1977. Dr. Brown reports daytime temperatures averaged 22.2 degrees C (72.1 degrees F) at Guelph compared to the long- time average of 17.4 degrees C (63.3 degrees F). During May 1977 there were 10 days with tem- peratures of more than 26.7 degrees C (80 degrees F) where normally one or two such days A would be expected. Clear skies were predominant in May 1977. According to Guelph statistics, a 50 percent increase (100 hours) in the number of sun- shine hours was recorded. Dr. Brown says May 1977 showed an average of 3.5 hours more sunshine per day than nor- mal. "All that heat and sunshine re- sulted in increased evaporation, retarded hay and pasture growth and in some cases problems de- veloped in the germination of the newly planted crops." Summer's a great time for vacations and trips in the family car. But increased traffic often means accidents. And that means blood is needed for accident vic- tims. Regular blood donors go on vacation too, and there's often a shortage of blood in the summer. So before you get into your car, why not check An your nearest blood clinic and give a unit before you go? It may benefit you in more ways than one.
