FIRST PLACE in the Senior 'Boys' 800 went to Lorne
Loughran of Howick Central School, who finished with a
time of 2:29.1. Robbie Nicholson of East Wawanosh finished
second, ahead of Howick's Steven Hallinan. The action was
part of a field and track day for North Huron public school
students last week in Wingham. '
BP fastballers
win, three as bats
finally get hot
After an extended slump dur-
ing which the team was unable to
beg, borrow or steal crucial hits,
the BP fastballer bats have final-
ly come alive, smashing out 32
hits in the last three games.
. The most recent win, a 5-2 .de-
cision over Teeswater Sunday
night, avenged . Wingham's 2-0
loss to that team in their last
liome.game. + -
In the loss, Wingham and Tees,
water were tied in hits at seven,'
but the BPers were unable to get
anyone by third base, stranding
eight base runners.
.The game Sunday night was a
different ,story, as Wingham
scored five times on its eight hits
to Teeswater's two runs on five
hits. The local team was behind
only in the errors column, com-
mitting three to Teeswater's
none. Don Edgar and Ed Daer
pitched for Wingham. ,
Two earlier wins also came on
the road, with Wingham. blasting
Clifford 12-2 and Cargill 12-0.
Against Clifford, Wingham
scored its 12 runs on' 11 hits and
two Clifford.errors. Ed Daer had
a two hitter for the BP team,
which played errorless ball.
The bats were even hotter
against Cargill, hammering out
13 hits, against Cargill's two. The
team again played flawless ball,
this time behind the pitching of
Don Edgar. Three ' errors were'
charged against Cargill.
The team is'shaping up to be a •
tough, competitive ball club clow
that the hitting is finally coming
through to bolster the already
fine defensive play. Fan support
.for the team is also improving
and should continue to grow if the
team keeps hitting and winning.
Remember, Tuesday night is
fastball night in Winghain. Game
times are 9 p.m.

DRIVE.IN THEATRE
FORE!!!—Mrs. Richard Whiteley drives from. the first tee during a golf tournament for
staff of Wingham Public School and their spouses, held last week at the Wingham Golf and
Curling Club. Her husband, recently appointedvice principal of the school, looks on and
offers helpful hints. Though many, of those present professed t be new at the game, rumor
has it everyone made it around the course and had a good time doing it.
Registration for summer ac-
tivities was by mail again this
year. Tuesday was the planned
deadline. However, as usual,
there will be some latecomers.
Unfortunately, they will be con-
sidered last.
Swimming registration num-
bers are up to 210, playground
totals are 27 and day camp is only
eight.
In comparison, the first two or
three years the pool was open we
had approximately 600 registered
in three sessions. Now that
Gorrie and Lucknow have opened
pools in the area, the big load is
off the Wingham pool. The staff is
not as large either.
POOL OPENS SATURDAY
The pool opens for public swim-
ming oh Saturday. However,
there are still a few lessons to
Turnberry School and the Golden
Circle School during the week.
We are also getting a few
wrinkles ironed out. A new heater
replaces the original heater. A
minor change in the chlorination
system caused us a problem, so
had to be changed back again,
POOL PAINTED
Thanks to the Wingham Kins-
men, the buildings have had a
fresh coat of paint applied. It is
welcomed. The old paint was be-
ginning to look a little drab.
FUN IN THE SUN
This playground program,
which was advertised for young-
sters four to seven. years of age,
will take place at the town park,
starting each morning at the old
"Bandshell" picnic pavilion.
The program will start Mon-
day, July 4, at 9:30 a.m. Each day
the time will -be 9:30-11:30 a.m.
and 1:15-4:30 p.m. Those taking
part can. go morning and after-
noon both or either separately. It
will be flexible enough that
youngsters can move in and out ,
of the program to attend swim
lessons.
The program will be runby two
teenagers' who have , had ex-•
perience with youngsters in the
past, Anne Campbell from Wing- `
ham and Dale MacDonald' from
St. Helens. These two will go to a
training course Thursday, June -
23 to Sunday, June 26. This course
is offered by the Lake Huron Zone
Recreation Association -••- the as-
sociation of recreation directors
of the Lake Huron Zone.
The content of the program
offered to the, children will in-
clude active games, music
games, many types of crafts,
supervised equipment •play and
some special events to be plan-
ned. We still have room for more,
participants. Please contact us
immediately if you are in-
terested.
DAY CAMP
Registration certainly allows
us lots more room in this pro-
gram, which is really a camping
experience happening during the
day. It will take place along the
Maitland in the first bush where
we have had it for years. It is a
nature program with camping a
main feature, providing games
and fun for all eight and above.
This program will start on
Monday, August 1, and go for
three weeks to August 19. A
youngster can take part'one, two
or all three weeks of this pro-
gram. We would like to think that
those who had taken swim les-
sons in July would still like some-
thing to do in August and would
find interest in camping.
They go but in the morning and
come back before supper. This is
for the eight to 13 age group. If
you need more information, get
in toich with us. An information
sheet will be mailed out to you to
tell you what- to bring andavhat to
expect at camp. We try to offer
enough for all the kids to partici-
pate.
LAWN BOWLING
The lawn bowling club is offer-
ing a program for the young
people also. If you have children
eight and up and they would like
to trylawn boling, contact Mrs.
Terry Nethery,. at 357-2525.
Many young people have alley
bowled all winter. Lawn bowling
is a much different sport, but just
as much fun. -It is not as ex= •
pensive a sport .as alley bowling. _
Give Mrs. Nethery a call. She will
fill you in on the details.
