Juveiifle girls win
two more big games
The Wingham Juvenile Girls
played two games this past week
and were winners in both mat-
ches.
Thursday night the team tra-
velled to Ripley. The game was
very close for the opening three
innings, but the Wingham girls
erupted for eight runs in the
fourth and eight more in the fifth
inning and eventually put . the
game away. The final score was
22-10.
This game was another good
defensive effort by the entire
team, plus excellent pitching
from Peggy Tervit and Mary de
Bruyn.
The offensive attack was once
again led by Diane Pennington;
who knocked out 2 home runs and
a single, Glenda Ballagh with 2
. doubles and a pair of singles,
Lynne Bridge with 4 singles, and
Mary de Bruyn with a long home
run which knocked in four runs.
Sunday's game in Wingham
had St. Marys as the opposition.
This was the closest and the
lowest scoring contest of the sea-
son thus far. Both teams received
fine pitching with Peggy Tervit
going the full nine innings for
Wingham. The score -wag"- very
dose all the way; by the end of
. the sixth inning the score was tied
at 6.
In the Wingham half of the
eighth inning, Ellen Reid led off
with a triple and was sacrificed
home by team catcher Lynne
Bridge. The girls held the St.
Marys team in the ninth and took
the game 7-6.
Team captain Ellen Reid pro-
vided most of the offensive power
in the game, breaking out of a
batting slump with a double, ,a
single, and the triple which 'edit)
the winning run, Peggy Tervit
added a double and Esther Neth-
ery hit 3 singles. •
The girls continue to play fine
baseball, due mainly to a very
well balanced attack. All team
members are strong hitters and
their defensive skills have been
improving with every game, So
far this season has been going ex-
tremely well and the team boasts
a record of 4 straight wins after
losing their opening .game.
This year's Juvenile lineup in-
cludes: Ellen Reid, Glenda .Bal-
lagh, Diane Pennington, Peggy
Tervit, Jane Vath, Laurie Johns-
ton; Marg Darling, Corrine Nes-
bitt, Lynne Bridge, Kathy
Cruickshank, Esther Nethery,
Janet Wood, Coach, Peter Zan-
kowski, and manager, Mary Ann,
Cruickshank,
Peewees lead league
with a 6 -1 -1 -record
Wingham,'s Brophy Peewees
have taken a seat on top of the
league standings with a little 'over
half of the season schedule left to
play. The teams most recent wins
have given it •a league -leading
record of 6-1-1.
d ne.two wins iast week came at
the expense of Exeter '10-8 and
Seaforth, 12-3. Next home game is'
a return match against Seaforth,
Friday night at 7 p.m. .
The win over Exeter was es-
pecially sweet, as the team's only
loss this' year came at the hands
of that club.
Kevin Saxton and Bill Brophy
each connected for a double and. a
single against Exeter. Steven
Gaunt had two singles and Dave
Montgomery and Mike Pletch
added one each.
Wingham was forced to shuffle
its lineup in the fifth inning after
a hard hit o'n Ken Deichert 'at
second base forcedf''him to leave
the game. Ron Schistad came in
from right field to play third base
for the rest of the game and he
played some heads -up ball,
throwing 'runners out on three
hard-hit balls to retire the side in
the final inning.,
In the win over Seaforth, the
team played well behind the
flawless pitching of Joe Tiffin and
excellent relief of Kevin Saxton.
It was ,the first meeting this year
between the two teams.
The Brophy team also demon-
strated it has some depth as it
was never headed from start to
finish, despite playing without
three of its regulars. (Names of
the missing players were not
available.)
Daryl Holmes, Ron Schistad,
John Haines, Ken Deichert and.
Steven Gaunt provided the hitting
in this, game. Ron; again at third,
and Steven in centre field, also
turned in sparkling defensive
plays, with Steven picking off
three good fly balls.
Other stand out performances
were turned in by Daryl at fire,
who picked the ball out of the -dirt
for a couple of outs, and Ken'
behind the plate..
