Wingham Advance-Times, 1977-06-08, Page 20Ja Page 8 -,The Wingham Advance Times, June 8, 1977 Plc.mning a vacation with safety in mind Don't let an accident or un- pleasant experience spoil your vacation. A little time and pre- planning is necessary, says the Ontario Safety League, whether it's a long weekend trip or a three-week holiday. The League offers pointers for vacationers. Make sure that you have stopped milk, newspaper and other deliveries and ask a neigh- bor to keep advertising circulars off your porch. Leave the window shades raised and arrange to have your lawn mowed. Prowlers watch for such tip-offs. You can also arrange with your local post office to hold all mail deliveries. Lock windows and doors when you leave the house and don't forget the basement windows and entrances. Be sure to shut off gas and water at the main valves and, unless the refrigerator or freezer is to be left on, shut off electricity..at the master switch. If you are leaving the current on, disconnect lamps and appliances at the wall outlets. If the re- frigerator is disconnected, leave the door open to prevent mold. Inform the police how long your' house ill be vacant. . Many departments will take a number and address where you can be reached in case of emergency. Have your car serviced thoroughly, paying close atten- tion to the safety features such as lights, brakes, tires, steering and windshield.wipers. Put a first aid. kit, flashlight, and fire ex- tinguisher in the car and a supply' of minor bits and pieces, that fre- quently break and stop you on the road. If you've got a fan belt, radiator hoses, points, plugs and fuses with you, any service station can install them to get you going. Plan your trip in advance so that you are, not covering too many miles in one day. On super highways, a constant speed can make you drowsy. Vary your speed and make frequent stops for coffee and to stretch your legs. If you are travelling to another province or state, remember that not all signs and signals are uniform. Check out your route before you start. If you plan your route through an organization like the Ontario Motor League or the CAA, they will advise you of local driving regulations. Don't try to crowd a year's exercise into two or three weeks. Take the sun in easy doses. Wear your sun glasses• and don't nap in, the sun. The Ontario Safety League cautions vacationers that alcohol is as much a problem in' outdoor activities as it is in driving. Stay out of the water for at least an hour after eating, and swim in sight of others, using the buddy system. Be sure that the water is deep enough and free of obstructions before diving. And don't try to swim too far. When boating, distribute the Toad evenly and wear PFD's (Personal Floatation Devices I Don't stand up . . . even when fishing. Check the weather before going far on - a large lake Remember, it is dangerous and illegal to operate motor boats in swimming areas. Most boats won't sink, so stay with it until help comes if it capsizes. When hiking, watch that the children don't sampl6 strange berries or touch unfamiliar plants. Wear good hiking boots and be sure of your footing when climbing The barbecue can be fun, but also dangerous. Don't squirt lighting fuel on coals that have started to burn. And don't use the barbecue as a source of heat for campers and tents. The coals emit dangerous carbon iTlonoxide. " , If you follow these tips from the Ontario Safety League, you should have a safe and happy vacation.
