BP fastballers
win 1 and lose 1
The bats were red hot May 31
as the Wingham BP fastball team
hammered out 19 hits to beat
Cargill 18-1 in seven innings.
Brian Coultes was the winning
pitcher in the game, called -after
seven innings because of rain.
In a game at Chepstow last
Thursday, three errors by the
team led to three unearned runs
as the BPs lost 402. The teams@
were even in hits at six- each.
All in all, Coach Neil feels they
are off to a good start and a game
to see will be the encounter with
Teeswater next Tuesday, tide

BALL
The' temperatures have been
hot and cold, sunny and rainy. We
have missed only two, nights so
far. On Monday of this week we
had rain all Sunday night and
;most of Monday morning. How-
ever, because the diamond had
been baked it was reasonably
easy to get into shape.
The new diam6nd on Park
Drive didn't hold any water. It
went straight into the ground. So
4hat was a good test for our newly
developed ball playing area. If
you have a'rained out game, to
play .it is important to check at
the recreation office to re-
schedule it
Last week we gave you the
scheduled games except the
-juvenile girls. It is as follows:

POOL
With all these hot spells some
have been wondering why we
haven't opened the pool earlier.
The pool is an expensive facility
to operate. We have tried opening
early and staying open after
Labour Day. It just has not payed
Off to open early. The buildings
will be painted tnis week by the
Kinsmen. The new water heater '
should be„ hooked up this 'week
and so you will see the water go-
ing into the pool by the weekend:
Carl Lee is the pool co-ordinator
again this year with guard in-
structors Tini Jorritsma, Mar-
lene Forton, Joanne Wood, Brian

'A' DIVISION CHAMPS of
calfe, Danny Montgomery
(
the 180 Dart Club, Wingham, 'ere Wayne Irvine, Brian, Met=
and Dave Schiestel.
'A'DIVISION runners up were Garry Reavie, Grant Perkins (missing), Bill Metcalfe and
Barry Gardner of the 180 Dart Club, Wingham.
rivals, Clinton.
Clinton jumped into an early 5-1
lead in the second inning, only to
have the local boys bounce back
with two in the bottom of the
second, two in the third and one in
the fourth to go ahead 6-5. Clinton
came bach with one in the fifth, to
tie the game at six.
The teams played it close to the
vest the rest' of the way and re-
mained tied at the end. Joe Tiffin
went all the way on the mound for
Wingham.
In Dashwood, against another
of the better teams in its group,
the team won 16-8 behind the cap-
able pitching of Kevin Saxton.
Kevin, starting his first game
as a peewee, really impressed his
coach as he was way ahead of the
hitters with his fastball.
The game was a good one to
watch, staying close for the first
four innings with Wingham on top
7-6 before breaking it loose.
Some excellent fielding plays
were turned in by some new-
comers to the team, and it looks
like the boys will be right in there
for a repeat of the trophy they
won last year.
The sons of two local MPPs
played against each other in the
game, with Steven Gaunt coming
out on top of the Riddell boy.
Steven made two good running
catches and played an all-round
good game.
Next on the list. of victims for
the Brophy peewees was Cre-
diton, which fell by the wayside
16-5 in Wingham Park.
Wingham used three pitchers
in this one to give them practice
end ' all showed real, promise.
Kevin Saxton started on the
mound and went three innings
before . being lifted with the
Brophy lads ahead 11-4. lie had
seven strike outs in the, three
innings.
Joe Tiffin, one of lastyear's old
reliables, came on to strike out
five in two innings while allowing
just one run. This was Joe's first
game after an accident at home'\
in which he cut a finger, re-
quiring 24 stitches to close the
gash. As luck would have it, the
accident was to his catching
hand.
Bill Brophy pitched the last two
innings, striking out four of the
six batters he faced. Bill provides
the left-handed pitching the team
badly needs to mix up opposing
teams.
Every member of the team saw
action in the three games and all
played well. This year's team
comprises: D. Montgomery, K.
Deichert, J. Haines, p.' Holmes,
S. Gaunt, J. Tiffin, K. Saxton, R.
Schistad, M. Pletch, K. Smith, J.
Moore, T. Foulon,, K. O'Hagan
and B. Brophy. Des Brophy and
Danny Martin coach the team.
