SENIOR RALLY—A targe turnout was evident at the Senior Citizens` third spring rally
held in Gorrie, Wednesday. At 1 T: 30 a.m. 110 people had registered. Special guest speaker
of the day was Tom Smith, president of the United Senior Citizens of Ontario.

' E. T. Smith, president of the
United Senior Citizens of Ontario,
was the guest speaker at the
spring rally of the Southern Zone,
Lake Huron District of the USCO,
in Gorrie.
Mr. Smith brought -greetings
from the provincial board. He
told the rally -of a senior citizens'
documentary on television that
he had helped put together. He
reminded them of the national
convention to be held in Niagara
Falls in September and a trip to
Spain in March that is being ar-
. ranged for the seniors.
Al'Sinclair from the Ministry of
Culture and Recreation in Han-
over, spoke on New Horizons, a
program where senior citizens
can apply for grants. He added
that in a recent study to see if the
1 area could use a senior citizen
housing program there was found
to. be insufficent population to •
. warrant the program.
. John Smith of Arthur presided
over the meeting which .opened
with -0 Canada, with Mrs. Velma
Mann at the piano. Rev. 0. Lara-
mie of the Anglican Church gave
'the dedicatory prayers and
Harold Robinson; reeve of
Howick, Township welcomed the
guests on behalf of the township
and Gorrie.
Lunch was held with the Gorrie
group supplying lunch and bever-
age for the head table guests.
In the afternoon session, the
president conducted an "Ih
Memoriam" and a moment's
silence was held for departed
members.
The election of officers was
held and only .the' treasurer
changed. The officers are as fol-
lows: president; John Smith,
Arthur; first vice-president, Miss
Ruth Johnston, Fordwich; secre-
tary, Mrs. Marjorie Sotheran,
Fordwich; treasurer, Ernest
Park, Arthur. .
Howard Latsch of Palmerston
led the group in the musical num-
ber, "How Great Thou Art".
Each of the clubs present at 'the
rally gave reports on what pro-
jects their club had done
throughout the year.
A sing song of old favorites was
led by Miss Minnie McElwain
with Mrs. John Freeman,
piano. At the end. of the session,
entertainment was provided b
the Arthur Senior Citizens' Glee
Club. A skit entitled "A. Little Old
Lady in a Nursing' Home" was
presented by the Wroxeter'club,
two piano 'solos by the Wingham
club,and "A Mock Wedding" by
the Fordwich club.
Mrs, Zerback, Stratford, a
director of USCO spoke briefly
explaining the senior citizens'
flag. Mr. Smith thanked the
executive and the Gorrie club'and
the meeting adjourned with a
poem "Grandma's Prayer" and
"God Save the Queen".

GORRIE — The Ladies' Auxi-
liary to the Howick Branch No.
307, Royal Canadian Legion, held
its annual commemoration of D -
Day •in St. Stephen's ;Anglican
Church on Sunday morning.
The parade was led ,by, the
Brussels Legion Pipe Band, with
Ladies' Auxiliaries from Brus-
sels and Blyth and Legion mem-
bers, from Brussels, Blyth and
Howick also attending, over 60
members in all.
Rev. 0. Laramie, 'assisted by
Rev. Harry,Jennings, conducted'
the service. A smorgasbord
luncheon was held in the Wrox-
eter Legion Hall following the
service.
'SENIOR CITIZENS—John Smith welcomed the 110 senior
citizens present at a spring rally in Gorrie. Clubs from
Wingharn, Lucknow, Wroxeter,Gorrie, Fordwich, Clifford,
Harriston and Arthur were present. Mr. Smith is president
of the Southern zone, number 33, Lake Huron Distrjct senior
citizens.

Fordwich Personal Notes
Harold Foster is a patient in
Palmerston Hospital where he
underwent major surgery last
week.
Mrs. M. Kirby is spending this
week with relatives in Toronto.
Mrs. Arnold Doig is presently
confined to Palmerston Hospital.
Mrs. Crosby Sotheran spent the
weekend with Mrs. Walter Buttell
of Blyth at her cottage at Bogey's
Beach, Lake Huron.
Mr. and Mrs. Carl Bast of
Listowel visited Sund0 with Mr
and Mrs. Anson Demerling.
Miss Lenora Beswetherick and
Miss Josephine Charlesworth
have returned from their tour
with the Royal Ontario Museum
to Ecuador. They spent one, week
in the rain forest of the Amazon,
one week going through south
Ecuador and one week on the
boat Iguana, visiting the Gala-
pagos Islands.
Mrs. Bill Haverfield returned
home last week after being con-
fined to Freeport Hospital the
past three weeks.
The sympathy of the com-
munity goes to Mr. and Mrs.
Wellington Hargrave and family
in Toss of the former's father,
Emmerson Hargrave of Listo-
wel, formerly of Fordwich.
Mr. and Mrs. Paul Wendt of
Toronto visited Sunday with Mrs.
E. A. Schaefer.
Mr. and Mrs. Alex Wray and
Miss Grace Wray of Scarborough
spent the weekend at their home
here.
Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Finley and
family of Acton spent the week-
end 'fit'^their home here.
A number from here attended
the "D" Day church service Sun-
day in St. Stephen's Anglican
Church, Gorrie.

tours Holy Land
!; ORDWICH — Rev. Wesley
Ball of Gorrie conducted a pic-
turesque tour of the Holy Land
when the Men's Club of the
United Church, Fordwich, met in
the church last week.
Percy Gedcke opened the
meeting and H. Winkel led in de-
votions: Rev.` T:' Fteeth Tit dobedd
the meeting with prayer and
lunch was served.
The next meeting will be held
June 21 at which time the election
of new officers will take place.
