Robert Aitken, a well-known
Culross farmer dies suddenly
A lifelong resident of Culross
Township, Robert McKenzie Ait-
' ken, passed away suddenly in the
Wingham and District Hospital
on Thursday, May 19, in his 69th
year. Mr. Aitken was fencing on
his grass farm on concession 6,
Culross, when he was stricken
with a heart seizure and rushed to
hospital. He lived only a few
hours.
Robert Aitken was born on
August 2, 1908, on Concession 6,
Culross, the eldest of four chil-
dren of the late Thomas B.'Aitken
and, Mary Pheme McKenzie. He
received his education at SS No,
4 Culross and the Teeswater
Continuation School. He later
R. Lorne Nichol
was last member
of his family
Robert Lorne Nichol passed
away at Wingham and District
Hospital after a few months' ill-
ness on Tuesday, May 24. He was
in his 87th year.
Mr. Nichol was the last re-
maining member of the family of
Robert Nichol and Mary Jane
McCutcheon. He was born and al-
ways lived on the same farm on
the sixth line of Morris Town-
ship.
On October 21, 1914, he married
Margaret Michie who died four
months ago: He is survived by
one son, Ross Ni^ehol ; three
grandchildren; one great-grand-
daughter and a niece, • Adah
Smith. He was predeceased by a
daughter Thelma in 1919; one
brother and two sisters
The late Mr Nichol rested at
the M L. Watts Funeral Home
where the funeral service was
conducted on Thursday, May 26,
by Rev Eric Ledrew Burial was
in Brussels. Cemetery

took a short course at the Ontario
Agricultural College, Guelph.
After the death of his father in
1926, hg took over his father's
farm, known as Elm Grove
Farm. Known for its fine stock,
Elm Grove has been in the Aitken
name since the 1890s.
Robert served as secretary -
treasurer of his area School
Board for some years. He suc-
ceeded Peter Grant as livestock
evaluator and was weed inspec-
tor for the township until his re-
tirement at the age of 65. A
member of the Teeswater United
Church, he had a genuine and sin-
cere concern for his neighbors
and friends, always taking time
to share their joys and sorrows
and to give of himself when need-
ed. He frequently visited the sick
and elderly, living up to his
Christian principles. He was also
a conservationist with a love for
land and things of nature.
Left to mourn are one brother,
Kenneth of Culross; one sister,
Mrs, Thomas (Marion) Hawkins
of Guelph; one niece; five ne-
phews and 13 grand nephews and
nieces. He was predeceased by
one brother John in 1943.
The late Mr. Aitken rested at
his late residence until Sunday at
1:30, when Rev. Arnold Proud
conducted the funeral service. In
his funeral oration, Mr. Proud
paid tribute to Mr. Aitken's life.
The hundreds of people who came
to pay respects attested to the
high esteem in which deceased
was held.
Pallbearers were neighbors,
Cyril Huber, Bonar Jarvis, Mel
Lorenz, Wilfred Strauss, John
Benninger and Douglas Kennedy.
Flowers were carried by Allen
Hawkins and Wayne Lorenz. In-

Dr. J: D. Forde
dies in London
Dr. John Donald Forde died
suddenly at University Hospital
in London on May 18.
He was born in Vegreville,
Alta. He graduated from Queen's
University in 1941 and had a pri-
vate medical practice from 1949
to 1960. Dr. Forde was in Ford-
wich during the fifties.
In June 1961 he began work
with the Provincial Department
of Health in Orillia and the Cedar
Springs Hospital. From 1963 to
1964 he took further training at
London Children's Psychiatric
Institute in the care of excep-
tional children.
Following this training, Dr.
Forde returned to Cedar Springs,
now known as S: W. Reg. Centre.
He remained there until his re-
tirement in 1972.
In 1973 Dr. Forde and his
family took up residence in
Goderich where he returned to
his profession at the Goderich
Psychiatric Hospital until it
closed in February 1976.
At the time of his death, Dr.
Forde was active on a part-time
basis at the Bluewater Centre.
He is survived by his wife
Elizabeth (MacDonald); three
sons, J. Alex of Edmonton, Peter
of Chatham and David of Goder-
ich ; one daughter, Mrs. K.
(Marylin) De Vine of Halifax; his
mother, Mrs. S. M. Martin of
White Rock, British Columbia
and two grandsons.
'The funeral was at 11 a.m. on
Saturday, May 21 from the Mac-
Kenzie Memorial Chapel in Luck -
now, conducted by the Rev. Aus-
tin Snyder of Central United
Church, Woodstock,with inter-
ment in Lochalsh Cemetery.

toria Hospital, London, on Fri-
day, June 3, Mrs. William
Thuell of Blyth in her 77th year.
She was the former Ruth Eliza
Breckenridge. Surviving are
two sons, Ross of Pheonix,
Arizona, and Samuel, London;
three daughters, Mrs. Russell
(Ruth) Dougherty and Mrs.
Violet Fowler, both of Blyth,
and Mrs. Isabel German,,, Lon-
• don; one brother, Jim Brecken-
ridgeof Wingham; and one sis-
ter, Mrs. Edith Fields, Lam-
• beth. The late Mrs. Thuell rest-
ed at the Tasker Funeral.

Brussels Cemetery.

ment followed in Fordwich
Cemetery. The Davidson Funeral
Home, Gorrie, was in charge of
arrangements.
Pallbearers were Lloyd Craw-
ford, David Hargrave, Doug Har-
grave, Roger Will, Bill Halloway
and Ken Hallman. Floral tributes
were carried by Trevor Crawford
and, Hugh Sterling,
Mr. Hargrave passed away
Saturday, June 4, at the Listowel
Memorial Hospital in his 82nd
year. He was born on November
20, 1895. His wife, the former
Edna Forster, predeceased him
on October 10, 1975.
Surviving are three daughters,
Mrs. Earl (Mildred) Hallman,
RR 1, Listowel, Mrs. Harvey
(Blanche) Orth, Listowel, and
Mrs. Ronald (Beatrice) Reed,
Orono; one son•,• Wellington of RR
1, Fordwich; nine grandchildren
and nine great grandchildren.
There are two sisters, Mrs. Irwin
(Evelyn) Gibson and Mrs. Myrtle
Wallace, both of Listowel. He was
predeceased by one sister, Mrs.
Clarence Bender.

The minutes were read by sec-
retary Kendra Purdon. Roll call
was answered by 12 members
and one visitor by namng a favor-
ite spring flower. The birthday
calendar was marked with Lyle
Willis the only one celebrating a
birthday. Karen Elliott received
the offering which was dedicated
by Donald Irwin.
The. Junior story, "Missionary
Helpers", was told by Mrs. Ar-
chie Purdon. Mrs. Hugh Simpson
told the Senior stories, "Treasure
our Dreams" and "Reflective
Glory".
