at annual Madill sports banquet
A large crowd of students at-
tended the athletic banquet at F.
E. Madill Secondary School last
week to see classmates honoik.c1
for their athletic achievernents.:
The highest award presented
by the school, the McKibbon
Trophy, this year went to Ruth
Henderson, for the girls, and was
shared by Roger and Ralph
Morrison, for the boys.
The award is, made in memory
of the late Dr. W. A. McKibbon,
who served on the school board
and had an active interest in ath-
letics. It goes to the athletes who
best exemplify the qualities of
effort and sportsmanship.
Dianne Pennington and Jeff
Bumstead received the top ath-
lete awards, while the Olympic
award went to David Ritter. This
is a new award, given this year
for the first time, and signifies
high achievement in Olympic
sports by a student in his -her
graduating year. It was donated
by J. M. Kopas, who said the idea
for it came to him after he at-
tended the Olympic Gaines last
•year at Montreal.
Coaches also received recogni-
tion, with Maureen Lisle and
Carolyn Schofield being pre-
sented with Coach of the XFar
awards. Miss Schofield was given,.
the award in absentia, as she is
currently in Sweden for a course
on physical fitness and coaching.
In girls' badminton, Karen
Douglas and Dianne Pennington
received the junior and senior
most valuable player (MVP)
awards respectively, while for
boys, Bill Ohm was giventhe
junior award and John Campbell
and Dave Bennett shared the
senior one.
Paul Cerson received the MVP
award for midget boys' basket-
ball, with the most improved
player (MIP) award going to Bill
Ohm. For the junior boys, it was
Steve Burke MVP and Tom
Henderson MIP.
Three players, Ralph and
Roger Morrison and John Under-
wood, shared the MVP award in
senior boys' basketball. The MIP
went to John Campbell.
Most valuable player for the
junior girls was Kathy Cruick-
shank, with Debbie MacDonald
-the most improved. Dianie
`Pennington wars given the MVpP
award in senior girls' basketball
and Ruth Henderson was con-
sidered the most improved.
A dedication award in girls'
cross country running went 'to
Judy and Debbie Adams, with the
most valuable designation going
to Freda Reinink.
Abe Versteeg was considered
most valuable runner for the
midget boys, Keith Metzger for
the junior and Murray Loutit for
the seniors.
In cross country skiing, the
girls' award for most valuable
went to Janet Wood and Shari
Smith took the award for most
effort. John Campbell was most
valuable and Bernie Webster
gave the most effort for the boys'
team.
Best defensive lineman in
junior football was Doug Mor-
land, with Doug Taylor taking the
best defensive player award,
Randy Guay the best offensive
player and Brad Cook MVP.
Brian CooPer took home the
most valuable player award for
golf.
Effort awards in girls' gym-
. nasties went to Irene Wray and
Tamara Hayes. Heather Brent
was recognized as best ' novice
and Pat Orien considered the
most valuable team member.
For boys' gymnastics, most
improved junior was Kevin
Walmsley and most valuable,
Jim Laidlaw. Carl Bondi was the
most improved senior, with Andy
Heim the most valuable.
Mary De Bruyn and Jim Black-
well were recognized for their top
performances in the hockey shoot
competition.
MVP awards in junior soccer
went to Doug McCall and Ken
Metzger; in senior soccer, they
went to Roger and Ralph Morri-
son.
Janet Wood took the award for
midget girls' track and field, with
the junior award going to Freda
Reinink ,and the senior to Twyla
Dickson. Midget boys' track and
field award went to Grant Gnay,
junior to Jeff Dickson and senior
• to Roger Morrison.
- The most valuable player in
junior giris' volleyball was Kathy
Cruickshank and Lori Goodall
was recognized as most im-
proved. Mary Beth Riley took the
MVP award for the senior girls,
with the MIP award going to
Ellen Reid.
In boys' volleyball, Steve
Burke, was junior MVP and
Currie Simpson was junior MIP.
Rick McKay was senior MVP and
Dave • Bennett` was most im-
proved senior player.
-Huron-Perth awards were also
given out at the banquet. Mary
De Bruyn, Kim Leslie, Gord
Kinahan., and Richard Jurjens
won' recognition for track and
field and awards for boys' gym-
nastics went to Andy Heim, Carl
Bondi, Jim Laidlaw and Dave
Ritter.
The junior girls' volleyball
team, comprising Norma Mac-
Intyre, Esther Nethery, Linda
Taylor, Lori Goodall, Kathy
Cruickshank, Nancy Dickson,
Mary Dickson, pebbie Mac-
Donald, Glenna Harkey, Janet
Wood, Michelle Rintoul and Barb
Haselgrove also received Huron -
Perth recognition.
The junior boys' cross country
team of Shane Purdon, Dave
Gamble, Keith Metzger, Gord
Kinahan and John Passchier took
Huron -Perth trophies, as did both
the boys' and girls' ski teams.
John Campbell, Rick McKay,
Kerhp Currie and Bernie Webster
comprise •the boys' team, while
the girls' is made up of Janet
Wood, Shari Smith, Ansley Currie
and Judy Malda,

OLYMPIC AWARD -The first annual Olympic Award was presented to David Ritter dur-
ing F. E. Madill Secondary School's athletic banquet June 1. J. M,• Kopas, donor of the.
award, made the presentation. This award is to be made each year to a boy or girl in
his -her graduating year in acknowledgment of high achievement in sports recognized as
Olympic sports. The recipient is chosen by the head of the Physical Health and Education
department, the staff and coaches, The award consists of a 'medallion, struck in bronze,
bearing the Olympic' Shield of the Athletes created by Dr. Tait McKenzie, Canadian
surgeon, physical educator and sculptor. The•walnut plaque housing the medallion was
designed by Boris Milosevic. Mr. Kopas said the idea of initiating such an award occurred
to him following his 'attendance at the Olympic Games last year.

turned at the weekend after
spending eight days at the South-
ampton Princess . Hotel in Ber-
muda. Dick was one of 84 life in-

ROGER AND RALPH MORRISON were co -winners of the McKibbon Trophy for effort
and sportsmanship in athletics at Madill Secondary School this year. This trophy, the
highest athletic award given by the school, is presented in memory of the late Dr. W. A.
McKibbon; a former board member with a strong interest in athletics. Ken Wood made
fhe presentation.
TOP ATHLETE AWARD for giris went to Dianne Pennington during the annual athletic
banquet at Madill Secondary School last week. Betty Shaw presented the trophy, noting
Miss Pennington's involvement in many sports both as team captain and valuable player.
