TO THE TOP OF
THE WORLD
To most people Canada's
High Arctic Islands are
shrouded in mystery. The
landscape, wildlife and cul-
ture in this region represent
unfamiliar terrain to south-
ern Canadians. Filmmakers
John and Janet Foster take
viewers exploring to within
420 miles of the North Pole in
North To The Top Of The
World. A Wild Canada 90 -
minute special, this film.airs
Saturday, June 30 at 8:00
p.m. on CBC Television.
The Fosters begin this ex-
pedition photographing harp
seals and their young pups
on the ice floes off the north-
ern coast of Newfoundland
and the humpback whales in
Placentia Bay. Via air they
travel north- along the east-
ern coastline of Canada .,to
Pond Inlet, an Inuit com-
munity set in a beautiful
Arctic landscape on Baffin
Island. There they film the
elusive narwhal, the long -
toothed whale of the cold
Arctic waters.
Moving on to the North-
west Passage John and
Janet point out the remains
of a camp on Beechey Island
made by the famous explor-
er Sir John Franklin. Fur-
ther north is Resolute Bay,
the major airport of the
north, and Cunningham IC ct
where the Fosters take some
intriguing footage of the
white beluga whale, They
then visit the remote wea-
ther station in Eureka, Alex-
andra Fiord and share a
campsite with an arctic wolf
in Tanquary Fiord.
And finally, John and
Janet complete their journey
with a spectacular aerial
panorama of the mountains,
glaciers and icebergs at the
top of the world.
