BPS improved
with two wins last week
By Peter Bauer
The Wingham BPs im-
proved their standings in the
Bluewater Fastball League
by winning two games last
week. The local team
trounced Palmerston last
Tuesday night in Wingham
by a 9-0 count as Don Edgar
hurled a four -hit shutout
through nine innings of work.
Edgar had little trouble
picking up the win, but his
counterpart, Ken Knight,
was rocked for nine runs on
an.11-hit attack. Knight gave
up two runs in the first, sixth
and seventh innings while
surrendering two more in the
second.
In action last Thursday
night, the BPs hosted
Chepstow and dealt them a 2-
0 defeat with Edgar once
again picking up the win by
hurling a five -hit shutout. He
needed some help from Ron
Riley in relief in the final
inning, who entered the
game with nobody out and
two men aboard.
Riley struck the first
batter with a pitch to load the
bases before retiring the side
in order, getting two infield
flies and then striking out the
final batter for the save.
Both BP runs came in the
first inning when Bruce
Skinn led off with a single
and was sacrificed to second
by Bob Armstrong. The
pitcher mishandled the ball
on the play and the runners
ended up on third and second
bases respectively.
Bill Brown followed with a
two -RBI double, scoring the
only two runs of the ball
game.

Why I Like Brownies
By Tharen Keil
It's fun! They have good
things to do. Lots of crafts.
We made owls, owl pins,
Iridian tents, chicken and
eggs, hats, witches and
many other things. We went
to camp. We go on hikes.
I had the most badges. I
wantto thank my Mom, Dad
and all the other people that
tested the badges.
I really like the leaders
because they keep us busy.
They taught us games, songs
and dances. We learned
many things when we earned

sixth innings. .
It `was in the final inning
that the Juniors managed to
work a miracle and strike for
seven runs. Steve Morrison
and . Kevin Coultes started
the inning with back-to-back
singles. The next two men in
the order failed to get aboard
and with two out it appeared
the game was all but over.
Jami"e McPherson
slammed a two -run homer to
make the score 4-2 before
Kent Cerson singled. in the
tying run, causing the bench
to come to life.
Then Lady Luck helped the
Juniors as Daryl Holmes
struck out but ended up on
first since the catcher lost
the ball and was late with the
throw to first. Pete Goodall
was hit by a pi h to load the
bases, bringi Blake Flett
to the plate.
• Having gone zero for three
in his previoustrips to the
plate, Flett proceeded to
plant the ball 230 feet over
the right field fence for a
grand slam home run which
vaulted the Juniors into a 9-5
lead which they held on to for
the win.
New Hamburg handed the
Juniors their first loss,
trouncing the local team 8-1.
Wingham tied the score at 1-
1 in the top of. the second
inning, but turned around in
the bottom half of the inning
to surrender four runs and
give New Hamburg a 5-1 lead
after two complete innings.
The Juniors gave up two.
Expert national series
awarded -to Hully Gully
After the unprecedented
cancellation of the June 17
Expert Motocross Nationals
at Hully Gully because of
heavy rain, the Canadian
Motorcycle Association has
countered by awarding Hully
Gully the most prestigious
national in Canada: the
finals of the 125 and 250
expert - nationals Monday,
Sept. 3, the Labor Day
weekend.
Marilynn Bastedo, general
manager of the CMA, told
Hully Gully promoter Randy
Collins that due to the cir-
cumstances of the un-
fortunate cancellation of its
first-round nationals, the
CMA would be awarding the
finals to Hully Gully.
This final round brings
together the highest -placed
expert motocross racers nil,
Canada to determine their
standings in the 1984 series,
as well as awarding the
coveted number one through
10 plates.
The finals of the Expert
National Series will take
place, starting at noon Sept. 3
and ' will end with the
crowning of the top national
plate holders after the races
at 5 p.m, in the hotly -
contested 125 and 250
more in the fourth and one in
the fifth to lose 8-1 orb the
mercy rule.•
Wingham faced New
Dundee again in game three.
This time Wingham led by a
5-0' count midway through
the fifth and held on as New
Dundee came to within one
run before the Juniors came
away 6-4 winners. Troy
Pocaluyko picked -up thelwin--
with Rick Scrimgeour
coming on in relief for the
save.
Guelph eliminated the
Juniors Sunday afternoon by
a 6-1 count. Wingham took a
1-0 lead after two innings,
but found themselves tied
after three and down by two
runs after four. The score
remained 3-1 until the
seventh when Guelph piled
up three more to make the
final 6-1.
Although not figuring in`
the finals, this tournament
gave the Juniors a chance to
meet other Junior clubs and
the two wins were a much-
needed boost for team
morale.

Juniors still
winless in
Bluewater league
By Peter Bauer
The Wingham Juniors
suffered an 8-3 loss at the
hands of Belmore last
Tuesday evening in
Belmore. Ross Baird picked
up the win for the home
team, allowing two runs on
three hits through six in-
nings. The Juniors were
unable to generate any of-
fence and were limited to
four hits in the game.
Belmore struck early with
a three -run outburst in the
first inning and picked up
two more in the second, two
in the seventh and one in the
eighth.
The Juniors were able to
generatemore offence in
Palmerston in a game
played last Wednesday
night, but the defence was
caught napping as they
dropped a 10-7 decision. Most
of the damage was done in
the third inning when the
Juniors gave up five runs.
The local lads were down
by seven runs heading into
the sixth inning and trailing
by an 8-1 spread before at-
tempting a comeback.
Unfortunately the gap was
... toollarge and the, Juniors fell
'short to lose the 10-7
decision.
A HEROIC EFFORT—Grant Coultes was out at third try-
ing to stretch a double as the BPs played Palmerston in
the tournament semi-finals Sunday. The throw was on
the Money and Kent Norman applied the tag, as Coultes
was just too big a target to miss. However his double
scored Ben Blackwell with what was to prove the only
BP run in a losing effort.
