Mrs. Allan Griffith, Chairman Wroxeter -Gerrie area A THE KINDERGARTEN CLASS from Sacred Heart School in Wingham entertained parents and friends at "graduation" exercises held last Wednesday afternoon at the school. The students are: back, Michael Rameloo, Richard Benninger, Gary Skinn, Phillip Egli, Ryan Hallahan, Toni Beyersbergen, Denice Schmidt, Steffanie Hills, Michael Laffin, teacher Ida Martin; front, Mark Ortleib, Brett Koopman, Melissa Bieman, Tanya Kleist, Ritchie Opel, Irene Hallahan and Colin Wright. Dr. B. Fretz addresses. the June Goforth meting The June meeting of the Goforth Ladies' Auxiliary of St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church was held last Tuesday evening. Glenna Marr welcomed the ladies and the meeting pe t vy the singing 'of "For. Beauty of the Earth". The special speaker, Dr. Betty Fretz, a Listowel optometrist, presented slides documenting her work with Medical Group Missions. This interdenominational organization has been of- fering its services to needy Ft Ns �9' NTAA.♦ Town of Wingham & Tumberry Township Bicentennial Celebrations July 19 - 22 countries for 15 years; Dr. Fretz donates two weeks each year to test eyes and prescribe glasses for these people. Her work has taken her to Nicaragua and Ecuador. The MGM goes into these countries by in- vitation only and its purpose is to show the love of God in a demonstrable way. The team of 120 workers puts in long hours and in eight days this past January members saw 10,040 patients, dispensed 8,600 pairs of glasses and per- formed 357 operations. Many of the conditions seen in these countries are not encountered here because of our ready access to optometric services. Dr. Fretz made a very im- pressive presentation and the ladies realized how very fortunate, in many ways, we are in this country. Mrs. Raymond Neill thanked the speaker and presented her with used eyeglasses for her work. Mr. and Mrs. Don Vair ministered in song with Mr. Vair providing the piano accompaniment. They sang "Count Your Blessings" and "Haven of Rest". The committee then presented a short program. • • Mrs. Harry Bateman and Mrs. John Norman read from Proverbs. Mrs. John Kerr read a meditation on "The Virtuous Woman". Mrs. Neill led in prayer and Miss Marr tested the ladies' knowledge of the Book of Proverbs with a quiz. The meeting then was turned over to the executive. A special offering was taken to defray expenses for the speaker at the upcoming, September potluck dinner. Refreshments and a social time followed. Former newsman receives award John Hancock, a former newsman, editor and sportscaster at CKNX Radio and Television, has been named Sportscaster of the Year by the Canadian Inter University Athletic Union. Not only is John the first CBC sportscaster to win the award but he is also the first broadcast journalist to be so honored. He now is employed by CBC Montreal. The award was presented to Mr. Hancock in Charlotte- town on June 19. Church Directo MRS. IDA MARTINI, Kindergarten' teacher at Sacred Heart School in. Wingham, presented a plaque for the Grade 8 class of 1984 to class representative Barry 'Schaefer last Thursday evening at the bicentennial pro- gram held at the school. The Grade 8 banquet was held June 12 at Sacred Heart Church. BELGRAVE — Members of the Women's Institute held their regular meeting in the WI Hall last Monday eve- ning, June 18. Mrs. Leonard James opened the meeting <, with" the Mary Stewart Col- lect and "God Save the Queen". A short business meeting followed.. A birthday party will be held at the Callandar Nursing Home, Brussels on Thursday, at 1:30 p.m. The ladies will cater to the Huron County Cattlemen's .• Association meeting July 11 'and duly 21 -arid -August 25, to- . the Blyth Festival. The program for the eve- ning of family and consumer affairs was taken by Mrs. Peter Campbell. John Green of Wingham, guest speaker spoke on different cuts of meat and also showed charts: Mr. Green spoke on government inspection. de- tecting drugs in the meat also services offered by the veterinary .clinic. His abattoir and veterin- ary clinic provides help in emergencies for problems on the farm. The topic was much enjoyed and a lively discussion was held. Lunch was served by Mrs. Lawrence Taylor and Mrs. Ross Higgins. DIANE VANDENBROEK . of RR 2, Gorrie, was presented with the Mary O'Malley Award for proficiency in Grade 8 at Sacred Heart School in Wingham at a bicentennial program at the school last Thursday even- ing.
